Will Doctor Strange Get Another Marvel Movie?

The news is official. There will be a second Doctor Strange movie, and it’s titled Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Marvel made the announcement at Comic-Con 2019, saying the film will release on May 7, 2021. Which means we have a couple of years to wait, but to satisfy your Strange cravings, let’s dive into what we know about the movie so far.

Who will return in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’?

Luckily, there will be some continuation from the last film- we don’t have to get used to new actors. Most of the big players are returning for the sequel. Steven Strange will still be played by Benedict Cumberbatch, and Benedict Wong will return as his sidekick, Wong.

Although in the first film, Strange realized he could not be with his love interest, Christine Palmer, she will still make an appearance in the next movie. Rachel McAdams will return to play Palmer.

A new character for Doctor Strange movies, Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen, has been confirmed to be a part of the sequel. No word yet on who will play the villain, since this will be a new character than was in the first movie.

Scott Derrickson will return as the director, so we can expect a similar style and form to the first movie. According to the Hollywood Reporter, sources say they are working on hashing out the movie’s script and overall plan now.

Hopefully, they’ll be able to begin production in the Spring of 2020, and if all goes according to plan, it will be ready for release in May 2021.

Doctor Strange could introduce horror elements to the Marvel Comic Universe

Just like the name implies, the sequel will descend into a scarier place than previous movies. According to We Got This Covered, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be more horror-influenced than we’ve ever seen in the Marvel Comic Universe before.

Sources have confirmed that the villain in this movie will be Nightmare.

Nightmare has appeared in comics in the past as a villain who terrorizes both humans and superheroes. SyFy Wire describes Nightmare as “basically a mashup of Freddy Kruger and DC Comics‘ Sandman.” He feeds off humanity’s collective dream energy and taps into their nightmares, often trapping them inside their worst dream.

Sources have implied that in the sequel, Doctor Strange will become aware of Nightmare when he starts hunting people in their dreams. At that point, he must face off against him.

After a long wait, it seems we have a basic idea of what the plot for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be, but fans are still eager for any information they can get their hands on. There’s still a lot of unanswered questions, and almost two years before the movie will be released.

Scott Derrickson teased fans about what to expect for ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’

At San Diego Comic-Con in July, Derrickson gave fans clues on what to expect with the upcoming movie, “We’re going to make the first scary Marvel Comic Universe movie,” he said, adding that it will be full of “psychedelic weirdness.”

Cumberbatch also joined in, by telling attendees that the second movie will “maintain the integrity of humor with the twist of horror that will have people gripped.”

He continued by saying that Doctor Strange will “be facing unexpected things, he’ll be in the position of the audience with not knowing what’s coming at him. We’re going back to trying to destroy him, I think.”
