Will ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ End After Season 16?
For 14 years the doctors at Seattle Grace Hospital, later named Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, have been entertaining the world. It is now the longest-running medical drama on TV and ABC’s longest-running scripted show.
When Meredith, Izzie, Alex, and Christina started their internships, they were fresh out of school. We have been with them every step of the way. When cast members left, and new ones stepped in, fans were there too. We have laughed and cried alongside our favorite characters.
Maybe a part of us wanted to believe the show would go on forever. Perhaps a life without Grey’s seems like a distant reality still far, far away. Unfortunately, Grey’s Anatomy might be coming to an end sooner than fans are ready for, according to interviews with Ellen Pompeo, and Shonda Rhimes.
Shonda Rhimes will back up Ellen Pompeo
Shonda Rhimes created Grey’s Anatomy, and she still writes, and executive produces the show. She also has a long-standing relationship with Ellen Pompeo the actress who plays the main character, Meredith Grey. Although Rhimes has made it clear that she loves Grey’s and wants it to continue, she won’t keep it going at any expense.
In an interview, Rhimes was very clear about wanting to keep the show fresh. She also wants people to realize that without Meredith, there is no show.
In an interview, Rhimes stated, “Ellen and I have a pact that I am going to do the show as long as she is going to do the show. So the show will exist as long as both of us want to do it. If she wants to stop, we’re stopping.”
She also said, “So I don’t know if we will see 600, but I want to keep it feeling fresh. As long as there are fresh stories to tell, and as long as we’re both excited about the story being told, we’re in. So, we’ll see where that takes us.” Reported Bustle.
Ellen Pompeo may be tired of playing Meredith Grey
It sounds to us that Shonda Rhimes has put the ball in Pompeo’s court. A lot has happened in the years since the world was introduced to Grey’s Anatomy. We have seen countless marriages, Deaths, and tear jerking moments.
Recently fans have speculated that the show is running out of storylines, and that might be the reason for lower ratings. What it comes down to for Pompeo and Rhimes is the appeal. Can Grey’s stay fresh enough to keep going?
When asked in an interview about whether the show would continue, “It’s something Shonda Rhimes, and I will decide together,” Pompeo told ET. “I’ve been doing it a long time, and I do get restless, but the fans are just still so passionate about the show.”
She also talked about the fans and how important the show is to them. “I think the fans will let us know when the numbers start to drop, and people aren’t watching the same, people aren’t as passionate about it… it’s time to call it.”
Will ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ end after season 16?
If you’re like the millions of fans out there trying to figure out if Grey’s Anatomy will end after season 16, you will need to wait for official announcements. As of yet, we haven’t gotten an official yes for season 16 either.
Although we believe season 16 will be approved, mostly due to Pompeo’s $20 million contract, they have not given it approval yet.
If the show were to go on without Meredith Grey, we would expect ratings to plummet. It’s a waiting game, for now, to see if a 16th season gets ordered by the network. If they decide to move forward, fans will have more time to prepare, but judging by Pompeo and Rhimes’ responses it doesn’t look like Grey’s Anatomy will go beyond season 16.
