Will Jessica Lange Ever Return to ‘American Horror Story’?
Ever since Jessica Lange first lit up the screen as conniving neighbor Constance Langdon in the first season of FX’s thriller series American Horror Story, she quickly became a fan-favorite. For four years, Lange delivered powerhouse performance after powerhouse performance from American Horror Story: Murder House to American Horror Story: Freak Show. After returning to the spooky series for so long, Lange decided it was high time to move on and leave the show much to the horror and heartbreak of the show’s fans.
Now that a few years have passed since Lange’s initial departure, fans of American Horror Story are beginning to wonder if they’ll ever see the 70-year-old actress again. After all, she made a cameo in American Horror Story: Apocalypse, reprising her role as Constance Langdon. So, would a future appearance by Lange, whether it’s a primary role or another cameo, ever be in the cards?
What has Jessica Lange been up to since ‘American Horror Story’?
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jessica Lange revealed that she wanted to leave American Horror Story so she could take a break to focus more on herself. She also revealed in a later interview that she wanted to leave the show on a high note and she couldn’t see herself topping her performance as Elsa Mars, the disfigured ringleader of a Floridian circus ground.
Currently, Lange is working with American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy on Netflix’s series The Politician. The show revolves around a teenager who wants to become president one day. Jessica Lange plays a grandmother, named Dusty, who displays symptoms of Munchausen by proxy, pretending her granddaughter is severely ill in order to gain attention and gifts.
“For the character of Dusty, what she really, really desired more than anything was to be appreciated, was to be wanted, was to be necessary, was to be loved. And in her twisted way, she became very necessary and important and admired,” Lange said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “I think it’s part of the Munchausen by proxy, this thing of wanting people to think you are doing such an amazing thing, giving up your own life to take care of this sick child.”
Does Jessica Lange ever want to return to ‘American Horror Story’?
Unfortunately, it’s highly unlikely that Jessica Lange will ever return to play a central role in future seasons of American Horror Story. After playing several iconic roles and delivering so many deliciously wicked one-liners, it seems as though Jessica Lange’s time with the horror series has reached its end.
When Entertainment Weekly asked Lange if she thought she would ever return to American Horror Story, Lange responded by saying, “I don’t think so. I feel like I got the best of it in those first four seasons. Great characters. It was exciting to do. I worked with some of my favorite actors but I can’t see that we could ever get back to that.” However, she still looks back at her time on American Horror Story with the utmost fondness.
“…Part of what I really loved about doing it was you’d come back with a whole different story, different characters, but the same actors year after year. And that was wonderful,” Lange told The Wrap. She also admitted her discomfort with returning to the show after it has changed so much over the years. American Horror Story veterans Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters have also left the show.
“…I think a lot of the actors that I was working with, people that I really love working with, like Sarah [Paulson] or Frances [Conroy] or Kathy [Bates] – I don’t know who’s in this new season, but I don’t think it would be the same.” she continued.
Do ‘American Horror Story’ fans still want Jessica Lange back?
It has been five years since Jessica Lange originally announced that she would not be returning for another season of American Horror Story. Despite the show’s evolution and a brand new cast, fans still believe that the show is not, and perhaps never will be, the same after Lange left. “Jessica Lange is the best thing that could ever happen to American Horror Story,” wrote one Twitter user.
Some fans even seem to think that American Horror Story began to go stale as a result of Lange’s departure. “American Horror Story hasn’t been as good without Jessica Lange,” wrote one Twitter user.
After Jessica Lange left American Horror Story, the show’s ratings began to plummet on Rotten Tomatoes. However, American Horror Story: 1984, the show’s newest season, seems to have the most positive reception of all the seasons with a score of 94%. With such a strong start to the new season, there’s only one question remaining: Will 1984 be enough to restore fans’ faith in the series, or will American Horror Story reach its final chapter soon?
