Kelly Ripa is the co-host of Live with Kelly and Ryan who is seen every weekday on ABC. Since she show involves Kelly Ripa (and Ryan Seacrest) sharing information with viewers and discussing various topics, it’s almost inevitable that something said on air would make headlines.
Recently, Kelly Ripa came under fire for her negative comments about ABC’s The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, which got many fans wondering: could this be the end of the TV host’s long-running career on the network? Here’s what we know.
Kelly Ripa said she can’t stand the ‘Bachelor’ and ‘Bachelorette’ series
With the new season of The Bachelorette premiering on May 13, Ryan Seacrest shared on a recent episode of Live with Kelly and Ryan that the new bachelorette, Hannah Brown, would be on their show Thursday.
“I don’t know who that is or what that means,” Kelly Ripa said.
Ripa then showed her lack of knowledge about the franchise by getting Hannah Brown and Cassie Randolph (who won The Bachelor last season) mixed up. She even referred to Colton Underwood (the previous bachelor) as “the guy that was here last week.” After Ryan Seacrest cleared up his co-host’s confusion and told her Colton’s name, Ripa defeatedly said, “You guys, you know how I feel about the show. It disgusts me.”
“I can’t stand the idea of 25 exceptional women fighting over one ordinary fella, in my opinion,” she continued. “You know how I feel, ladies, we are too special to be arguing over a guy.”
A while later, Kelly Ripa shared that when The Bachelor first premiered back in 2002, she thought to herself: “‘How come they don’t have a woman with men fighting over her? How come they don’t do that show?'”
However, when The Bachelorette came out a year later, apparently, Ripa did not enjoy it as much as she had thought. “I found that show just as creepy but in a completely different way,” she told.
Kelly Ripa got shaded by people involved in the series
With news about Kelly Ripa’s comments going around the internet, it’s obvious the folks involved on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette are not happy.
Creator and executive producer of The Bachelor, Mike Fleiss, tweeted: “Easy, @kellyripa … #TheBachelor franchise pays your salary!”
Chris Harrison, the longtime host of both series, said: “Look out #BachelorNation. @KellyRipa is coming after you and your ‘disgusting’ Monday night habit.”
Could Kelly Ripa get fired for these comments?
The Bachelor and The Bachelorette are two of ABC’s most successful shows with millions of viewers tuning in every week. Kelly Ripa, having been representing ABC since her appearance on the network’s soap opera, All My Children, in the 1990s, is not someone who should be taking digs at another series on the same channel.
However, it’s unlikely Kelly Ripa will get in a lot of trouble over her negative remarks.
The 48-year-old has been hosting various versions of Live since 2001 (both with someone else as well as by herself) and making $20 million a year on the show, so it’s clear she is a valuable asset to ABC. As such, it would most likely take more than being negative about another ABC franchise to fire Kelly Ripa.
In fact, given the nature of the show and how long she has been working there, Kelly Ripa has made headlines numerous times in the past for some things she said that, in hindsight, did not always sound good. Nevertheless, she continued to appear on Live everyday and entertaining viewers as they kick off their morning, so there’s no doubt she will move on from this controversy as she often does.
