Will Kevin Hart End Up Hosting the Oscars?

Kevin Hart was originally asked to host this year’s Oscars awards show. But after some controversial tweets came back to haunt him, he stepped down from the role. However, with the Oscars coming up quickly and no new host having been announced, people are wondering if Hart will be the host. And some surprising support has fed the rumors that Hart will reconsider, too. Will Hart host the Oscars after all?

Kevin Hart was supposed to host the Oscars — until homophobic tweets resurfaced

Hart was slated to host the 2019 Oscars up until early December, when homophobic tweets surfaced from his past. Most of the tweets, which were written between 2009 and 2011, have been deleted, but according to CNN, one read, “Yo if my son comes home & try’s 2 play with my daughters doll house I’m going 2 break it over his head & say n my voice ‘stop that’s gay’.” Once the tweets surfaced, people immediately called for Hart to step down. He responded with a statement saying he would step down because he didn’t want to be a distraction, and he apologized to the LGBTQ community.

Afte Hart stepped down, there didn’t seem to be anyone else who wanted to host

While most people would agree that the Oscars shouldn’t be without a host (the last time that happened, the show was unorganized and didn’t go well), there hasn’t been anyone to take over the role since Hart stepped down. Some believe it’s because such a high-profile gig means people will dig into your past to uncover any mishap or inappropriate or unaccepting thing you once said or did, and people don’t want their lives inspected so closely. Since someone was able to dig up Hart’s tweets from nearly 10 years ago, everyone assumes there must be something that can be dug up about them, too. And nobody wants to have anything about their past resurfaced. However, not having a host means the show would be flirting with disaster.

Ellen DeGeneres announced her support for Hart, which garnered some backlash

Hart was invited to appear on DeGeneres’ talk show, Ellen, where the two discussed everything that had happened with his tweets. On the show, DeGeneres showed support for the comedian and said outright that he should host the Oscars. However, as expected, she was met with backlash. Those who support the LGBTQ community said DeGeneres was wrong for supporting Hart despite his homophobic attitude in the past. But some agreed with DeGeneres and said Hart has grown as a person and doesn’t think that way anymore.

Rumors suggest that Hart wouldn’t host the Oscars at this point no matter what

Hart did reconsider hosting the show after the support from DeGeneres and his fans, but ultimately, it looks like he won’t be hosting the 2019 Academy Awards. At this point, Hart would have had very little time to prepare. Plus, it’s no secret that some still greatly oppose him as the host. And by now, Hart still hasn’t taken back his withdrawal, which means it’s a pretty safe bet the Oscars will need to find someone else.
