Will Marvel Fans Have to Wait Until 2021 to See Deadpool Join The MCU?
There are a lot of questions about Deadpool’s (Ryan Reynolds) future following Disney’s acquisition of the popular franchise. Nothing official has been confirmed, but sources claim that Marvel wants to incorporate Deadpool in a superhero flick before the end of Phase 4. But will we have to wait until 2021 to see Reynolds join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)?

Deadpool to join the MCU
Disney’s new merger with Fox brings several franchises into the fold, including X-Men and Deadpool. The only issue is that the purchase came after Marvel meticulously planned out Phase 4, pushing potential reboots to Phase 5 or beyond.
Fans have been waiting a long time to hear any news on the Deadpool front, but a source close to Marvel says that Reynold’s will be reprising his role as the Merc with a Mouth sooner than expected.
According to We Got This Covered, the source claims that Marvel has carved out a quick cameo for Deadpool in 2021. We still don’t know what movie this will be, but Reynolds will reportedly appear in a post-credits scene.
The scene should give us a good idea about how Marvel plans to introduce Deadpool to the rest of the characters in the MCU and might even feature him mingling with other superheroes.
While fans cannot wait for another Deadpool movie, it’s pretty great to hear that the studio plans on bringing the character into the MCU as quickly as possible. It’s also not that surprising, given Deadpool’s immense popularity over the years.
Inside Deadpool’s return
Marvel has struggled with the idea of bringing Deadpool into the MCU for a long time. Kevin Feige and company first wanted to give Deadpool multiple cameos in other projects before granting him his own film.
There was a lot of talk about Deadpool not being introduced to the MCU until after his third movie, which would have been several years out.
They also thought about having Deadpool appear in a post-credits scene in the upcoming movie, Black Widow. Those plans, of course, did not happen, though it sounds like Marvel is sticking to the post-credits plan.
Unfortunately, we have no idea what Deadpool’s post-credits cameo will look like. His other two films were rated R, so it will be interesting to see if Disney continues that in the MCU.
Deadpool also breaks the fourth wall in his films, something that is expected to continue, despite the fact that no other movies in the MCU use this technique.
It is also sad that we will have to wait until 2021 until we see Deadpool. Then again, it is good to know that the character will make his way to the MCU sooner or later.
What movie might feature Deadpool?
Marvel announced its full lineup of Phase 4 movies during comic-con in San Diego this past summer. For 2021, Marvel has three movies slated to open in theaters: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Thor: Love and Thunder.
There is no telling which film will feature a Deadpool cameo. Odds are, the wise-cracking hero will show up in Love and Thunder, which is scheduled to premiere in November of 2020.
Whatever happens, Deadpool’s cameo will be followed by a third film in the character’s franchise. The movie will probably have little to do with the first two offerings, depending on what else is going on in the MCU.
More than likely, Deadpool’s next stand-alone movie will be rated R, just like the first two. His cameos in other projects, however, will probably be a lot tamer and fall well within the confines of a PG-13 rating.
Marvel has not given us any hints about a premiere date for Deadpool 3, though fans should not expect it to hit theaters until at least 2022.
In the meantime, the next movie in Marvel’s lineup is Black Widow, which is set to open in theaters on May 1, 2020. The Eternals is next up with a premiere date next November.
