Will ‘Marvel’s Runaways’ Return for Season 3 on Hulu?
In 2017, audiences were introduced to Marvel’s The Runaways, an exclusive Hulu series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and based on the comic book series of the same name.
With dynamic storylines and unique, exciting characters, the show became an instant hit with fans, and soon after the first season premiered in November 2017, fans started clamoring for even more.
What is the show about?
Marvel’s Runaways, often referred to by fans as simply Runaways follows six teenagers who leave their homes and band together to stand against their parents, who form a supervillain coalition known as the Pride. Runaways started production as early as 2008 but ran into production difficulties, and the project was shelved until 2013.
The massive success of The Avengers kickstarted Runaways back into production, and the first season officially started streaming in November 2017 on Hulu.
The young cast, relative unknowns before starring in Runaways, include such talented actors as Lyrica Okano, Virginia Gardner, Gregg Sulkin, Ryan Sands, and Ever Carradine. Fans loved the cast and the numerous in-jokes and references to the original comic book series. Runaways is often referred to as the “OG” of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Runaways definitely lived up to the hype.
Also making the show unique was the fact that it was the very first Marvel show to be featured on the Hulu streaming service.
What happened in the second season?
The second season of Runaways premiered in December 2018 and featured even more dramatic plot twists and character development. The second season saw the teens dealing with living on their own, well away from their villainous parents. In addition to figuring out how to get along with each other, the Runaways hatch a plan to help defeat the Pride, all while trying to uncover a possible mole in their midst.
The second season received a good critical response, with various reports praising the more complex storylines. Fans also loved the second season, and enjoyed how the series brought something new to the Marvel universe – never before had the MCU featured a full cast of teenagers as leads.
Will there be a third season?
For a while following the second season of Runaways, the future of the show was uncertain. Although the fan response was clear, with an obvious demand for more episodes, showrunners stayed mum. At least, until late March, when Hulu officially confirmed that Runaways had been renewed for a third season. The statement by showrunners claimed that “Season 3 will be a magical time on Runaways as we deepen our connection to the Marvel Universe.”
Fans exploded on social media over the big announcement and immediately started speculating about what they could mean by deepening the connection to the MCU. While rival comic book studio DC is often touted for their expert ability at combining worlds and character storylines, Marvel traditionally steers clear of such things, at least in respect to their various TV shows. With the new wave of Marvel films slated to start later this year, truly big things could be happening for Runaways.
At this point, little else is known about what could happen in season three. A release date has not yet been given, but following the pattern of the first two seasons, fans can likely expect to start streaming the new season in November or December 2019.
