Will Matthew McConaughey Continue Hot Streak With ‘The Company Man’?

Matthew McConaughey can definitely afford to be picky about new projects following his Oscar-winning part in Dallas Buyers Club and critically acclaimed turn in HBO’s anthology series True Detective (for which he also recently received an Emmy nomination). Though the actor is already starring alongside Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film Interstellar, many have been curious as to what else he’ll choose to participate in next. Now, it looks like audiences may have their answer. According to Deadline, McConaughey is in talks to star in The Company Man.

The script, written by Andrew Cypiot, made the Black List known as the Untitled Ed Wilson Project and is based on true events. CIA agent Edwin Wilson rose dramatically in the agency’s ranks after going behind enemy lines to secure a weapons contract and report the details back to bosses right after the Cold War. But after a sudden switch in company policy, Wilson was abruptly fired. Despite the loss of his job, Wilson refused to stop being operational and eventually ended up becoming public enemy number one at the U.S. Attorney’s office.

While the part sounds like it could be the perfect follow-up role for McConaughey after his gritty but stellar performance in True Detective, reps for the actor insist his participation in the film is not set in stone just yet. Deadline reports that the movie currently has no director, and McConaughey is allegedly trying to help line one up before the project is shopped later this summer.

Should he choose to take on the part, it’ll be the second project he’s signed on to do after his award-winning streak. Besides Interstellar, which was shot in summer 2013 and is slated to hit theaters in November 7, the actor is also participating in Gus van Sant’s drama Sea of Trees. The picture, which was scheduled to start production earlier this month, stars McConaughey as a suicidal American who makes friends with a man lost in Japan’s Aokigahara forest (played by Ken Watanabe). According to Variety, Naomi Watts was in talks to play McConaughey’s character’s wife.

McConaughey is also potentially reprising his role as strip club owner Dallas in Magic Mike 2, although some recent reports suggest that the actor will not appear in the sequel and is being written out of the script.

Fresh off such an incredible hot streak, it’s presumable that McConaughey would only be seriously considering scripts that are truly noteworthy. From the sound of it, The Company Man role could be the right next step for the actor to keep up his run of superb performances in the past few years. We’ll have to stay tuned to see if he decides to officially take on role. Regardless, it’s safe to say that both critics and audiences alike will have high expectations for whatever project he signs on to for the foreseeable future. Hopefully, McConaughey’s recent foresight for choosing roles that allow him the opportunity to truly shine will only continue with whichever part he takes on next.
