Will Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Have a Baby Shower?
Now that the royal weddings for 2018 are done, baby announcements are starting to roll in. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry recently announced they are expecting their first child. Will the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have a baby shower?
Meghan and Harry have been wanting a baby for a while
Prince Harry has been talking about becoming a father for some time. “My sources are saying that Prince Harry, particularly, is very keen to start a family, pretty soon after the royal wedding,” Nicholl told Entertainment Tonight. “He’s made no secret about wanting children.”
Prince Harry’s brother, William, already got a head start on growing his own family with wife, Kate Middleton, so this may have caused Harry to start thinking about his own family plans. “I think that moment [for Harry] really kicked in when his brother, Prince William, of course, settled down with Kate Middleton,” said Nicholl in her Entertainment Tonight interview.
During an official royal visit to Ireland with Harry earlier in March, Meghan seemed to be hinting about her own desire to have a baby. She made a comment that had some people wondering just how much longer it would be until the pair made a baby announcement. As Meghan was looking at hypoallergenic baby items, she said, “I’m sure at some point we’ll need the whole thing.”
Meeting Prince George and Princess Charlotte
Nicholl told Entertainment Tonight Harry wanted Meghan to meet some of the youngest royal family members so she could start to get an idea of what their life could be like after marriage. “The reason he wanted Meghan to meet Prince George and Princess Charlotte was so she could see that—this would be hopefully replicated by them, that they would go on to have children,” she said. “That you marry into the royal family, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a regular family with cute children, and here are George and Charlotte to show that that can happen. That was really important to him.”
Will Meghan and Harry have a baby shower?
Meghan likely won’t have a baby shower. Since there is the “added pressure that they are clearly very wealthy, and a lavish baby shower would be seen as highly inappropriate,” said royal expert Victoria Arbiter in an interview with ABC News. “There’s nothing they can’t go out and buy themselves,” she continued. Furthermore, royals are generally not allowed to accept gifts. Any baby gifts given to the duke and duchess must be “respectfully returned.” If they do receive baby gifts, they will most likely ask people to donate to charity, instead.
Pregnancy rules the British royal family must follow
Besides the rule against baby showers, there are several other pregnancy rules members of the British royal family are required to follow. During pregnancy, a woman’s feet often swell, but that doesn’t mean royal women get a pass when it comes to footwear. Meghan will still be expected to wear shoes that cover her toes. “Open-toed shoes are considered informal footwear and inappropriate for formal occasions,” etiquette expert William Hanson told Harper’s Bazaar. Royals are also not allowed to reveal the gender of their unborn child to the public.
