Will Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Spend New Year’s Eve With the Royal Family?

There are plenty of royal holiday traditions, and being present at the festivities is often part of the expectations of being a member of the royal family. A lot of these traditions revolve around Christmas, and they include a wide spectrum of activities ranging from button-down, black-tie affairs to silly and fun gag gift exchanges.

After Christmas is over, though, the united image of the royal family’s celebrations shifts. Many members of the family head their separate ways to ring in the New Year in the manner that best suits them.

With that in mind, what can we expect from Meghan Markle and Prince Harry—especially since reports suggest they are already distanced from the rest of the family and after they’ve skipped Christmas celebrations with the queen?

The New Years celebration is far less formal

While Christmas traditions are well-established for the royal family, the New Year celebration is not nearly as formal. The different members of the family have their own way of welcoming the next year.

Queen Elizabeth, for example, often sticks around Sandringham where the Christmas festivities take place. She will invite other guests to join her and Prince Philip in lively activities like pheasant hunting and horseback riding.

Meanwhile, Prince William and Kate Middleton tend to host their own house party with guests invited to dance the night away. Other members of the family start trotting the globe, ringing in the New Year at far-flung destinations.

When you’re as famous as the royal family is, there is always a party to attend.

In years past, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have found their own ways to celebrate New Year’s Eve. As an engaged couple, they rang in 2018 at a lively party in Monaco. Last year, however, Markle was pregnant, and the pair retreated to a private destination to have a quiet celebration on their own.

Many wonder what the two will do to ring in 2020. After all, they seem more and more distanced from the royal family as a whole. They drew a lot of attention when they announced they wouldn’t be spending Christmas with the rest of their family members at Sandringham.

Instead, they spent the holiday with Markle’s mother: Doria Ragland.

How are Meghan Markle and Prince Harry spending the New Year?

Rumors have been swirling for months that the pair are looking to make their break from traditional royal duties more serious with some speculating they have a move to California in the works.

Meanwhile, even their Christmas card photo is being used as evidence that the Duke and Duchess will not be hemmed in by traditional expectations and duties. They seem very much in love and affectionate with one another and their growing family, but they continue to raise eyebrows and turn heads with their daring decisions to blaze their own path through royal living.

Will they continue that trend for their New Year’s Eve celebrations? Prior to his marriage, Prince Harry often spent New Year’s Eve at exotic and fun locations such as Mauritius, Swiss resorts, and Los Angeles. Now that he’s settled down and the father of a young child, it’s possible that he and Duchess Meghan will opt for yet another year of quiet seclusion to get some peace from the hustle and bustle of their daily lives.

Either way, if they choose to spend the holiday away from the royal family, it will be right in line with previous years and other family members. Don’t expect that to stop media outlets from reporting their absence as a scandal, however. It seems that everything this pair does is scrutinized for more evidence of their distance from the family and their royal duties as a whole.
