Will Meghan Markle Develop Gray Hair While Pregnant Like Kate Middleton Did?
The entire world watched the wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry — and even before they said their vows, we couldn’t get enough of this lovely and adoring couple. Being in the public eye isn’t all fun and games, however. Both Meghan and Harry are watched like hawks by the media — and even something as innocuous as a single gray hair can cause a stir.
Now that Meghan’s pregnant, we’re excited to see how the royal couple are preparing for the baby’s arrival. But others have another question: Will Meghan develop gray hair during her pregnancy like so many other women do? Here’s what we know so far.
Developing gray hair during pregnancy is common for some women
Meghan is certainly beautiful — but she’s also 37, which is prime time for some women to start seeing gray hairs even aside from pregnancy. But it turns out there are plenty of hormonal factors that can cause hair to gray faster as well. The Daily Beast explains a pregnant woman can experience a whole range of hair changes through their pregnancies thanks to the hormones. Curly strands may become fine, or some women may notice they lose more hair when they give it a wash, too. And when it comes to going gray, it seems hair colorists are divided on exactly what causes pregnant women to see it more often — but it certainly does happen.
Whether it’s from stress or changing hormones, there’s no doubt that Meghan may experience the all-too-common side effect of going gray. And, since Meghan’s mother has also sported a few gray strands in the past, it’s clear it’s also in the genes, too.
Kate developed gray hair during her pregnancies
Meghan wouldn’t be the first royal to sport some grays while pregnant. We remember when Kate’s gray hair made national headlines directly after her pregnancy with her first two kids. In 2013 and 2015, fans of Kate noticed she had a few spots of discoloration. The royal didn’t seem bothered by her change in pigment, however. As Carrie Pink, a mom of four, told New York Daily News, “She’s just exhibiting what real life is like for any woman who’s pregnant and a mom — you don’t have time, or you feel concerned because you don’t want to expose you and your unborn child to chemicals.”
Kate may have had good reason to skip the dye while pregnant, too. The publication notes some studies have found that using hair dye while with child may increase the risk of childhood cancer. Today, the FDA simply recommends that mothers-to-be wear gloves when touching hair dye, but even so, perhaps Kate was just being cautious.
Meghan Markle’s gray hair may already be showing
While we haven’t seen any gray hairs from Meghan since she announced her pregnancy, we do remember when a single gray strand was pointed out by Marie Claire. While it was barely visible to the naked eye, it reminded plenty of us that, at the end of the day, the royals are still just human. And we’re sure Meghan’s stylist took care of it right away after the story hit the web.
The single gray strand also had many rushing to Meghan’s defense with, “So what?” Fans flocked to social media to defend the royal — and we’re guessing if any more gray hairs crop up during her pregnancy, she’ll see the same support again.
