Will Meghan Markle Return to Acting After She Leaves Royal Life Behind? The Surprising Way She Landed a Voiceover Deal with Disney
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s announcement that they will be leaving their royal duties behind has many wondering if the duchess will return to acting again. Markle gave up her career as an actress when she married Prince Harry, leaving behind her role as Rachel Zane on Suits.
Why Markle retired from acting
In their announcement, the couple shared that they would be quitting their roles as “senior” members of the royal family and working to become “financially independent.” Many wonder if that means Markle will reinstate her acting career.
When Prince Harry and Markle announced their engagement in November 2017, the now duchess spoke about why she’d be leaving her life as an actress behind. She shared: “I just see it as a change… It’s a new chapter, right? And also keep in mind I’ve been working on my show for seven years. So we were very, very fortunate to be able to have that sort of longevity on a series, and for me once we hit the 100 episode marker I thought, you know what, I have — I have ticked this box and I feel really proud of the work I have done there and now it’s time to, as you said work — work as a team with [Harry].”
She continued: “I think what’s been really exciting as we talk about the transition of this out of my career, but into the role, is that, as you said, the causes that have been very important to me I can focus even more energy on, because very early out of the gate I think you realize once you have access or a voice that people are going to listen to, with that comes a lot of responsibility which I take seriously.”
Markle wants more than royal life, insider claims
As rumors swirled about the exact reasons why Prince Harry and Markle decided to quit their royal duties, The Sun’s royal photographer, Arthur Edwards, said he believes that royal life is “not enough for Meghan.”
He told Fox News, “It seems that it’s not enough, it’s not enough for Meghan.”
Suits ended in July 2019 and, at the time, the show’s creator Aaron Korsh told Deadline that he didn’t ask Markle to return out of ‘respect’ for her royal role, explaining, “I thought about asking, and I thought about even using audio footage that we have to come up with something, and in the end I didn’t ask.”
He added: “I just thought, I’m going to respect her new life and not put her in the position of having to ask. We decided not to put her in that position, so I never asked.”
Markle has landed an acting gig and has Prince Harry to thank
If she does decide to pursue acting again, Markle might be in hot demand — and she’s already landed a job, signing a voiceover deal with Disney in return for a donation to the wildlife charity Elephants Without Borders, according to a report from The Times. It’s believed that she recorded it before she and Prince Harry left for their six-week holiday break.
Did Prince Harry get her the gig? At the red carpet of the Lion King premiere in July 2019, Harry was spotted chatting up Disney CEO Bob Iger, with the conversation caught on video by a fan. Prince Harry is seen gesturing to his wife, saying, “You know she does voiceovers?” and Iger responds: “Oh, really? Ah, I did not know that.”
Prince Harry continues: “Did you know that? You seem surprised! She’s really interested,” and Iger replies, “Sure. We’d love to try.”
