Will Meghan Markle’s Baby Have a Title?

There’s no doubt about it, the new royal baby is big news. From the moment that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced that they were expecting, in October 2018, the world has been beset with baby fever.

With Meghan Markle having just celebrated her baby shower in grand style with all of her best friends, everyone is more ready than ever to welcome Baby Sussex. One of the big questions that hover around the impending arrival of the baby (along with gender and name, of course) is what title, if any, the new royal baby will have.

What will Baby Sussex’s title be?

While the royal family is steeped in tradition, as it turns out, there is no set protocol for the title that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby will have. Their baby will be seventh in line for the throne, following Prince Charles, Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, and of course, Prince Harry himself. While he or she will retain that spot of seventh in line, in spite of any more children that Prince Harry and his wife end up having, it is highly unlikely that the baby will ever get the chance to sit on the throne as king or queen, with so many people already in line for the coveted spot.

As to what the new royal’s title will actually be, while the queen issued a patent in 2012 that declared all of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children would be referred to as prince or princess, that ruling hasn’t yet been issued for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby. In the absence of a prince or princess title, the new baby (if it is a boy) could possibly be known as Earl of Dumbarton or be given a Duke title. If the baby is a girl, she will be known as a “Lady,” unless the queen decrees otherwise.

Some reports suggest that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle might not want their baby to have a royal title and that they will encourage their child to pursue a career separate to the royal family. Both Prince Harry and Meghan Markle know what it’s like to work hard, with Markle’s established Hollywood career to her credit and Prince Harry’s military experience.

Will Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s baby get royal treatment?

Even though the baby might not be given a prince or princess title, he or she will still experience a truly fabulous life. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will make sure that their baby has every advantage in life, including access to the best educational facilities and lavish family vacations.

That being said, the royal pair are committed to making sure that their little royal is given a “normal” upbringing. They are renovating Frogmore Cottage, a much more modest royal residence in the country, a marked difference from the environment that Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children are being raised in. It is also likely that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will raise their child well away from the public eye, and keep public appearances to a minimum.

With no real chance of becoming the reigning monarch of the country, there might be slightly less responsibility and expectation – their baby will have the chance to go on and make something more of his or her life, beyond the preconceived expectations of the palace.

Of course, the Queen – or Prince Charles, when he ascends the throne, could make an amendment that grants Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby a specific royal title. With the Duchess of Sussex’s due date estimated at late April or early May, fans don’t have too much longer to wait to find out just what lies in store for the new royal baby.
