Will Prince Charles Make Camilla Queen When He Becomes King?

Princess Diana and Prince Charles separated in 1992 and three years later, during the infamous BBC Panorama interview, the public learned just how unhappy their marriage was. It was revealed by Diana herself that there was another woman her husband was in love with and carried on an extramarital affair with. That woman was Camilla Parker Bowles.

After Diana’s tragic death in 1997, Camilla was viewed as public enemy No.1. Charles’ mistress was vilified by many for breaking up Diana and Charles’ marriage and was referred to as the “most hated woman in Britain” by the tabloids.

In 2005, the Prince of Wales married Camilla and, in an effort to ease the backlash from Diana’s fans, the palace stated that she would receive the title of princess consort, not queen consort when Charles ascends the throne. But does the prince plan to make her queen anyway?

Princess Consort or Queen Consort?

The difference between the titles is that a princess consort is given to the spouse of a sovereign prince and queen consort is used for the wife of a reigning king.

However, princess consort can be used by a king’s spouse if queen consort is not. This was thought to be the case with Camilla who initially said she would go by princess consort rather than queen consort when her husband is crowned.

But times have changed and Clarence House recently removed a statement from its website that the Duchess of Cornwall will in fact be known as princess consort when the time comes.

What Prince Charles is expected to do

Royal experts agree that Charles wants to make her Queen Camilla and most likely will.

“The official line is that when Charles becomes king, Camilla will become princess consort. I personally think that is nonsense,” said Charlie Proctor, editor-in-chief of Royal Central. “When Charles takes to the throne, Camilla will become queen consort. The monarchy is not a popularity contest, and you can’t change titles in fear of certain people still having chips on their shoulders.”

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams agrees adding that “When Charles becomes king he is widely expected to make Camilla queen consort, as every king has always had one. This is not popular in the polls but is now thought pretty certain to happen.”

What the public thinks of Camilla today

How the duchess is viewed by the public today is much different than how she was after Diana’s death.

Her popularity has certainly increased since she and Charles tied the knot and in 2016, Queen Elizabeth II elevated her to the Privy Council. The promotion was a sign of approval and cemented Camilla’s place in the royal family. The fact that Princes William and Harry have accepted her and denied reports that she is some type of wicked stepmother has also helped greatly.

No one knows for sure what will happen when Charles takes the throne but if Camilla is named queen consort, Proctor said the move should be supported.

“Camilla will make an excellent queen. She is a hardworking, kind and dedicated member of the royal family,” he stated. “She has an excellent relationship with [Queen Elizabeth], William and Harry and young Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. But most importantly she has an amazing relationship with Prince Charles. [They] will be an excellent king and queen.”
