Will Prince William Become King Before Prince Charles?

The American public is more obsessed than ever with the British royal family. Starting with Princess Diana, when the royal family started to become more relatable, they have been the subject of countless headlines, documentaries, and social media fan accounts.

Now, with Diana’s two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, having their own families, people love them more than ever. William, in particular, is one of the most popular members of the royal family, and many have been speculating in recent years that William could soon ascend to the throne, despite not being next in the line of succession.

Queen Elizabeth II has been ruling the country for well over 60 years and is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. However, there is a definite plan in place for the line of succession. Prince Charles, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s eldest son, is in line to rule next. Following Charles is his son, William, who will assume the throne. After him is Prince George, William and Kate Middleton’s son. The rules have changed within the past fifty years regarding women on the throne, so Princess Charlotte, William and Kate’s daughter, is next in line after George, even before her uncle, Prince Harry.

While that is the official line of succession, there have been rumblings that it might not end up exactly as planned.

Could Prince William bypass his father?

Although Charles is to take the throne following the death of his mother, there are definite problems with the idea of Charles as the monarch of Britain. For one thing, Charles is already seventy years old, quite an advanced age for anyone to start such a grueling new chapter in life and take on new duties. Charles has also suffered from a distinct lack of public popularity, and according to a recent poll, ranks way down in seventh place for popularity among all members of the royal family, lower than Meghan Markle and even Queen Elizabeth’s husband, Philip.

Many royal fans have been voicing the opinion that William should bypass his father and take the throne when the time comes, or even if the queen will skip her son and grant the throne to William while she is still alive. William is definitely more popular with the public, and as a young man in his mid-thirties, is in the prime of his life. It seems as though changing up the line of succession might not be a bad thing at all.

Why Prince William won’t bypass his father

As much as the public might like to see William become king before he is technically supposed to, it is very unlikely to happen. First of all, there is no hard evidence that the queen favors William over Charles as her next-in-line, just a lot of internet rumors. In addition, disregarding the line of succession is actually against the law — if it was to be changed, it would require an act of British Parliament. Needless to say, changing any legislative action is not something that happens overnight, and requires a great deal of planning and forethought.

Even though William is currently hard at work preparing for the day that he does become king, it likely won’t be anytime soon. Even though his father, Charles, isn’t exactly the most popular member of the royal family, he is in all likelihood the next royal to take the throne. Fans of the royal family will definitely be watching and waiting for the next development in the line of succession timeline.
