Will Prince William’s Rose Hanbury Rumored Affair Cost Him the Throne?
Although it has not been proven to be true, people cannot stop talking about the affair, and it seems likely that William’s reputation might have taken a huge hit.
Since royals are supposed to uphold a positive image in the public eye, is it possible this rumored affair with Rose could cost William the throne in the future?
When did Prince William’s alleged affair with Rose Hanbury come out?
Back in March, “inside sources” close to the couple allegedly began saying that William had an affair with Rose, who was a good friend of Kate Middleton, as the Cambridges and the Cholmondeleys live near each other.
According to these sources, Rose and Kate used to be close, but they fell out with one another for reasons that are not known. However, some people believe that infidelity might have had something to do with it. This version of the story picked up like wildfire and had started spreading to tabloids around the world.
Some royal followers even believe that William and Prince Harry’s relationship became icy when the younger brother found out that his older brother was cheating on his wife with one of her best friends.
How did Prince William and Kate Middleton react to the affair rumors?
The couple has not publicly said anything in response to these allegations, though this is not surprising because royals usually rely on the palace’s press secretary to speak on their behalf. Nevertheless, the palace has not addressed these affair rumors either. Some people believe that it is their way of saying that the rumors are so ludicrous that they do not deserve an acknowledgment.
However, William’s lawyers have sent out a warning concerning the tabloid allegations, saying: “in addition to being false and highly damaging, the publication of false speculation in respect of our clients’ private life also constitutes a breach of his privacy pursuant to Article 8 of the European Convention to Human Rights.”
Will Prince William’s rumored affair cost him the throne?
William is currently second in line to the throne behind his father, Prince Charles. It’s easy to think that if the affair rumors get out of hand and/or proven to be true, William would likely have to give up his right to the throne and let the next best person take over. But, actually, that might not be the case. History seems to show that William could still remain in the line of succession even if he has these allegations ruining his reputation.
For one thing, Charles had a pretty famous affair himself. When he was still married to Princess Diana, it came out that Charles had been pursuing his ex-lover, Camilla Parker Bowles — despite the fact that she herself was married as well. News of the affair rocked the royal family and painted Charles as an uncaring husband and father, tarnishing his image in the public eye.
However, things calmed down after a while. Charles got to marry Camilla almost ten years after Diana’s death and royal followers also warmed up to the couple eventually. More importantly, Charles never had to give up his place in the succession line even though there are still many people who have not forgiven him for what he did to Diana.
If William’s affair is never proven to be true, it will absolutely not cost him the throne. But even if the public finds out that it is true, it’s likely that he would not have to give up the throne either.
Rather, his popularity would surely drop and many people would be on Kate’s side to support her the way the British public supported Diana in the 1990s. And, as with Charles, after the emotions surrounding the affair disappears from people’s consciousness, William could slowly build up his reputation again.
