Will the Public Lose Respect for the Royal Family Once Prince Charles and Camilla Rule?

The royal family has always been one of the most famous families in the world. It seems that nowadays, the family makes the news every day in some way (in part due to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s volatile relationship with the media). But right now, Queen Elizabeth is still ruling. And everyone knows that Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles haven’t always been in the public’s good graces. Will people lost respect for the royals once Charles and Camilla take over?

Charles and Camilla are next in line for the throne

Everyone has been so fascinated with the younger generation of royals that they seem to have forgotten who is actually next in line for the throne. Charles and Camilla, who have been married sine 2005, will step into the roles of king and queen consort once Queen Elizabeth steps down. Camilla, who is formally known as the Duchess of Cornwall, didn’t take on the title of princess after marrying Charles because the family wanted to respect Princess Diana. But Charles and Camilla have been through a lot with their relationship, and it’s caused some tension between them and the public.

Charles and Camilla were shunned by the public once their affair broke

It was more than 30 years ago now that the world found out about one of the most infamous affairs in history. Charles had previously dated Camilla before marrying Diana, but when he was away serving in the British Navy, Camilla married Andrew Parker Bowles. Charles returned and wed Diana, though the two were never truly in love. Eventually, he rekindled his past romance with Camilla; the two did their best to keep things under wraps, but soon enough, Diana learned that they had started seeing each other again. The whole marriage unraveled, and Charles and Camilla were strongly disliked by the public.

Charles has the lowest approval rating among any royal

In 2018, a poll was conducted to find out who the British public thought was the most well-liked royal. It was no surprise that Prince William and Kate Middleton were high up in the rankings, along with Prince Harry and the queen; all of them had more than a 70% approval rating. However, Charles proved to be the least-liked royal of them all; his approval rating was extremely low at only 36%. As of November 2017, Camilla only had a 20% approval rating among the public, showing that the two of them are still not in the people’s good graces, despite the affair occurring more than three decades ago.

Once Charles and Camilla rule, it’s possible people will be less interested in the royals. The queen has built up such a strong reputation for herself through the years, and it doesn’t look like the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall will be able to meet those same expectations.

It’s possible people are taking the royal family less seriously as a whole lately

Recently, the royal family has been in the news a lot lately. There has been endless drama surrounding Harry and Meghan, and last year, William was accused of cheating on Kate with a close friend (those rumors were never proven). The family, over the past couple of years, has seemed to become more akin to celebrities than public servants, and it has likely negatively affected their reputation. It doesn’t appear that the public is excited for Charles and Camilla to rule, though people still do seem to have a lot of respect for William and Kate. However, it will probably be a long time before we see those two take the throne.
