Will Rey Turn to the Dark Side? Here’s What We Learned About ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’
Being good is too boring, even for Rey. With the new clip of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker from the D23 Expo, fans saw this character holding a red lightsaber. Does that mean Rey will turn to the dark side? Will Kylo Ren turn to the light? Here’s what we know about the upcoming movie in the sequel trilogy.
The D23 clip of ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ showed Rey dressed in black, holding a red lightsaber
On Aug. 26, 2019, Star Wars shared their D23 Expo clip on YouTube. Within a few hours, the video trended on the platform, earning millions of views from fans. One of the most shocking scenes was a brief look at Rey dressed in all black, holding a double-edged, red lightsaber. Could Rey turn to the dark side?
Although not much is known about Dark Rey, fans have a few theories regarding the character’s fate. Additionally, more has been revealed about the themes of this upcoming movie, thanks to Kelly Marie Tran.
Kelly Marie Tran says that one of her favorite things about Star Wars is the ‘redemption’ aspect
So, let’s say that Rey turns to the dark side — will the character become The Rise of Skywalker’s main antagonist? Some fans think it’s unlikely, especially because Rey uses a blue lightsaber during some trailer scenes and because of the inclusion Emperor Palpatine, the sith lord. Could Rey create her own redemption arc? Will Kylo Ren turn to the good side? During an interview at the D23 Expo, actress Kelly Marie Tran gave a few hints regarding the themes of the upcoming film.
“I think there are so many themes in the Star Wars films, my favorite being redemption and this idea of no matter what comes at you you can- well, I’m not going to tell you what happens. The idea of redemption,” said Kelly Marie Tran during an interview.
Some fans have different theories regarding Rey and her dark side
There’s no way that Rey can turn to the dark side — or is there? After all, Kylo Ren saw Rey turn when their hands touched during The Last Jedi. Since Disney shared the clip of Dark Rey at the D23 Expo, fans shared their different theories on social media. Some suggested that the only way this is possible is because of Star Wars’ main antagonist, Emperor Palpatine.
“Rey is a descendant of Palpatine. You have current good (Rey) struggling against her true nature (dark side) and current evil (Kylo Ren) struggling against his true nature (good,)” suggested one Twitter user.
“The Emperor will try to manipulate her into joining him and using this vision to show her what she could become but seeing as this trilogy is dubbed ‘the Age of Resistance’ she will most likely resist the temptation of the dark side,” said another Twitter user.
Disney has not confirmed any fan theories. Until the premiere of the movie, fans can stream Star Wars content on Netflix and, starting in November, on Disney Plus. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres in the United States on Dec. 20, 2019.
