Are you digging Tom Holland’s version of Spider-Man in Avengers and Spider-Man: Far From Home? If you can’t get enough of the actor right now, you’ll be pleased to know that he’s collaborating none other than superstar Will Smith. The two are starring in an animated film called Spies in Disguise that’s due to come out at Christmas.
Last week, 20th Century Fox shared its second trailer for the movie which shows Will Smith voicing a James Bond-esque figure and Tom Holland in a seemingly familiar role. Take a peek at the trailer and decide for yourself if this pairing reminds you of another hero-to-aspiring-hero relationship. We just hope no tears will be shed as was done with the deaths of Peter Parker and Tony Stark.
What fans can look forward to with ‘Spies in Disguise’
Don’t assume to know what’s going on with this movie after watching the first 20 seconds of the trailer, because Smith’s Lance Sterling isn’t 100% like his Men in Black character. (We know you’re thinking that). When Holland’s smart but eager-to-impress scientist Walter Beckett introduces one of his ideas to Sterling, the sky is the limit.
That’s literal because Lance Sterling gets turned into a pigeon for his world-saving mission. Since pigeons are the unsung heroes of the underworld and spy community, this is perfect. The comedy marks the first time the actors are working together, and looks be an entertaining, funny family movie for the holidays.
ScreenRant reported that the movie has ties to an animated short by Lucas Martell called Pigeon: Impossible. In it, Walter Beckett is the spy who accidentally gets tangled up in hijinks with a pigeon, putting the entire world at risk. Not the case here, as Fox describes Spies in Disguise this way:
“Super spy Lance Sterling (Will Smith) and scientist Walter Beckett (Tom Holland) are almost exact opposites. Lance is smooth, suave and debonair. Walter is … not. But when events take an unexpected turn, this unlikely duo are forced to team up for the ultimate mission that will require an almost impossible disguise – transforming Lance into the brave, fierce, majestic… pigeon.”
Other stars lined up to appear in the movie
Karen Gillan, who starred in Avengers and Jumanji, voices a character named Eyes, while DJ Khaled will be playing the role of Ears, who we assume is a spy that won’t be caught yelling out “We Da Best!” We could be wrong, though. Rashida Jones, Masi Oka, and Ben Mendelsohn are also part of the cast.
SyFy Wire mentions that the script is being penned by Ferdinand writer, Brad Copeland, and if you loved the animation in Ice Age: Collision Course, know that some people from that team also worked on this film.
Smith is still riding on the success of Aladdin, but the last time fans heard him in an animated flick was in 2004’s Shark Tale. Holland is also busy with animated films. In addition to lending his voice to Spies in Disguise, he’s also voicing characters in two 2020 films: Onward and The Voyage of Dr. Doolittle. These two know how to pull off action, comedy, and family films well so add this one to your Christmas break movie list for some lighthearted fun.
