Will Smith’s Most Successful Film Will Surprise You
Whether you like Will Smith’s dad jokes or not, you have to give it to him: He’s one of the most beloved stars out there. Over the course of his 30-year career, Smith has starred in every type of movie and played almost every kind of character. For example, he flew like a butterfly and stung like a bee in Ali, fought aliens and other otherworldly creatures in Men in Black, and played a matchmaker teaching men how to woo women in Hitch.
While those films and many others have seen phenomenal numbers at the box office, his most successful film is actually kind of a shocker.
Aladdin is actually Smith’s most successful film
When you think about the actor, you might think about some of the movies mentioned above or other blockbuster hits like Bad Boys and Handcock. But those haven’t experienced anywhere close to the amount of success as 2019’s Aladdin.
Back in July, Aladdin became Smith’s most successful movie. The live-action remake has raked in more than $1 billion at the box office, beating Smith’s highest-grossing movie for 23 years, Independence Day (1996), which earned $817.4 million. While Aladdin has received lukewarm reviews, Smith scored a fair share of praise for his performance as Genie, with some critics saying that he “stole the show.”
Smith’s response to Aladdin becoming his highest-grossing movie
The actor acknowledged the accomplishment on Instagram, saying in a video that he felt “humbled and honored.”
“This is a post that I’m just humbled and honored to make right now. …To be in this game as long as I’ve been in this game and to have my biggest movie at this point of my career, I just want to say thank you,” the 50-year-old actor said before thanking fans in over a dozen languages. “Just thank you, everybody, around the world, thank you, thank you. Who I miss?”
Suicide Squad comes next
Suicide Squad ranks behind Aladdin and Independence Day. According to Forbes, the 2016 superhero film pulled in $746.8 million. Though the movie received negative reviews for its “muddled” plot, fans flocked to theaters to watch its ensemble cast, which includes Margo Robbie, Jay Hernandez, Viola Davis, Cara Delevingne, Scott Eastwood, and Jared Leto.
Smith could break this new record
The actor has a bunch of highly-anticipated movies coming up that could set a new record. He’s starring in Gemini Man (October 2019), a sci-film film that tells the story of an assassin who meets a clone of himself who can predict his every move. Smith also has a role in December’s animated Spies in Disguise, in which the world’s best spy is accidentally turned into a pigeon. And he’s also in the long-awaited cop film Bad Boys for Life, which hits theaters in January of 2020.
Stay tuned to see how those films perform at the box office. With any luck, they might surpass Aladdin.
