Will ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ Be Tom Holland’s Last Time Playing Peter Parker?
With Spider-Man: Far From Home on the horizon and the end of Marvel’s Phase Three fast approaching, fans are curious as to Tom Holland’s fate within the Marvel franchise. Will he return to don the Spidey suit once more, or will Far From Home mark his last turn as the web-slinging and quick-tongued showbiz aficionado?
Tom Holland, following in the footsteps of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, is the third actor to take on the role within the last 17 years. However, he is the youngest actor, and technically, the most age-appropriate one to take on the role (given the comic books’ depiction).
If Tom Holland were to continue with the franchise – aging into his mid-twenties – what would come next for Parker? Would he be sent off to college, or would the filmmakers push the high school narrative until Holland got a little too long in the tooth? Let’s start with the facts, and draw conclusions from there.
Tom Holland signed a six-movie contract with Marvel
Tom Holland signed a six-movie contract with Marvel when he agreed to play Spider-Man. So far, he has appeared in Civil War, Homecoming, Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and soon Far From Home. As of now, he is one film away from completing his contractual agreement.
While Tom Holland has committed to six films, these agreements mostly favor those behind the MCU spectacles. Meaning, if there is no reason to bring Tom Holland back, he doesn’t have to return; it’s just that the option is not in the actor’s hands. So, with this information, will Tom Holland come back after Far From Home? If so, will he return for a standalone movie, or will he feature in a future mash-up?
Does Tom Holland have a future in the MCU following ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home, and what does it look like?’
Based on the critical and audience reception Tom Holland has seen as Spider-Man, the head honchos in charge of setting Marvel movies into motion would be foolish to remove him from the MCU before he finishes his contract.
Homecoming boasts a 92% critic score and an 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Not to mention, Tom Holland’s portrayal in the title role is hailed as one of the film’s most substantial assets. While Holland started as a much lesser known actor, the MCU has transformed Tom Holland into their own little box office lucky charm. He holds enough star power, all by his lonesome, to bring people to the theatre.
Given that Tom Holland retains the star power needed to sell out a movie theater, Marvel Studios would be wise to use this to their advantage. Meaning, rather than introducing yet another standalone film following Far From Home, Holland’s final turn as Spidey should be in a mash-up.
Rumor has it that Marvel is planning on releasing the ‘New Avengers’ come 2022. Given that this movie will likely feature several lesser-known stars as “Young Avengers,” Tom Holland may be the secret sauce the film needs to further pique interest.
While the MCU could sell a movie without a single star, a big name always helps. And though Spider-Man may not be part of the Young Avengers in the comics, when has the MCU ever closely followed the comics?
In short, given Holland’s fan following, we likely won’t say goodbye to the star just yet, and next time we see him, he probably won’t be fighting the baddies alone.
