Will Thanos’ Unraveling of the Universe Be Undone in ‘Avengers 4: Endgame’?
Avengers: Infinity War ended on an incredibly suspenseful note. Thanos had apparently beaten the Avengers, and with a simple snap of his fingers he had unmade half of the universe. The main story ends with Thanos doing just as he told his daughter, Gamora, he would – sitting back to watch the sunset, knowing that his work was done.
Seemingly this would mean that his days of evil (which he believed to be for the better good) were done, and he was in retirement. But could this truly be the end? With another movie coming out, it would appear that this is not the end and the battle against Thanos is not yet over. How could the Avengers battle any threat to humankind with half of them wiped out?
Fans wonder whether Thanos’ unraveling of the universe will be undone in Avengers 4: Endgame, which will debut in theaters in just a few short months. While nobody can be certain what will happen, taking a look at the original comic book can give some insight into what fans might expect.
The movie is loosely based on the original comic book
Avengers: Infinity War the movie is loosely based on the comic book, The Infinity Gauntlet. The comic book was actually a series of six issues that played out in The Avengers, beginning in 1991. The six-issues also had some major tie-ins in later issues. So what does it say will happen next?
What happened in ‘The Infinity Gauntlet’
In the original comic book series, it’s important to note that the events do not play out exactly the same as in the movie. Again, it’s a loose adaptation and not an exact one. So, at this point in the story Thanos had the stones, murdered most of the Avengers, and snapped his fingers to wipe out half of existence.
Once this is done, Thanos reaches a kind of higher plane of existence in which he is more an ethereal being. While his spirit is away from his body, Nebula snatches the gauntlet off of his body. Oh, and it’s important to note that in the comic books, Nebula is Thanos’ granddaughter instead of his daughter, but he treats her in pretty much the same terrible way in both versions.
Once Nebula has the gauntlet, Nebula uses it to turn back time 24 hours, which is enough to undo all the biggest things that Thanos had done. But Nebula is also a villain, and she becomes consumed by the power of the gauntlet, too. So the Avengers team up with Thanos to defeat her, who then uses the gauntlet in the same way Nebula did.
Much more happens, but that is the basic gist of it. A lot of time travel, and in the end, all the lives which were lost in the final moments of the unraveling of the universe is made whole again. Unfortunately, this does not include Loki (for those who believe he still lives).
Could this happen in ‘Avengers 4: Endgame’?
So the real question is whether this plot will play out in the final Avengers movie. Most people are guessing that it will, albeit (again) loosely. With many characters from the comic book not even introduced into the movie series, things will have to shift. Interestingly, Nebula does still live after the unraveling of the universe so she could be the one to save everyone.
Most fans agree the movie will show an undoing of everything Thanos did at the end of the movie, but how that happens is still up in the air. The only real way to find out is to watch The Avengers 4: Endgame when it hits theaters in April.
