Will the ‘Breaking Bad’ Movie Be About Jesse Pinkman? Here’s What We Know So Far

There are plenty of people who consider Breaking Bad the greatest television series of all time. The drama, the nuance, the attention to detail… it’s possible to watch the series over and over again and still miss out on some of the subtler clues woven into the storylines. It’s just that good.

Created by Vince Gilligan, Breaking Bad premiered in 2008 and ran for five glorious seasons on AMC. By the time it ended, it was one of the most watched cable shows and had earned 16 Emmy awards, 8 Satelllite Awards, 2 Golden Globes, and 2 Peabody Awards.

It ended at the height of its popularity, which is another part of the appeal. There was no time for audiences to grow bored or for the story to drag on too long. But allowing the show to end on such a high note also left fans hungry for more. Luckily, Gilligan and team had a plan for that, too.

What happened on ‘Breaking Bad’?

A lot of stuff happened over the course of five seasons. But long story short, the series Breaking Bad followed high school chemistry teacher Walter White in the wake of a lung cancer diagnosis. White was brilliant but depressed with his life after being cut out of a billion dollar company he helped create. His family, including a disabled son and pregnant wife, Skyler, struggles to make ends meet on his teacher’s salary.

Through a strange turn of events, Walter White connected with a former deadbeat student Jesse Pinkman and the duo began manufacturing and distributing crystal meth to pay for Walt’s cancer treatment. Things quickly spiraled out of control as complications arose with powerful drug kingpins. With his chemistry knowledge, Walt was able to create a high quality product that customers loved.

There were other problems too. Like how Walter White’s brother-in-law was a DEA agent, and how eventually Walt made more money than his wife could ever hope to successfully launder. Even after Walt went into remission, he still thirsted for power, and his quest for financial freedom becam dark and ugly as his greed took over.

Is there a sequel to ‘Breaking Bad’?

The series finale of Breaking Bad aired on September 29, 2013. Spoiler alert: Walter White dies at the end, Jesse Pinkman escapes, and many other characters wind up dead, too. Fans wondered how the series could go on without the main character.

Enter the show Better Call Saul, a spin-off prequel that followed the life of secondary character Saul Goodman, one of the more popular characters on the show. The show is still being produced and is massively popular with Breaking Bad fans, especially those who want more of the backstory. But a prequel fails to answer on very important question: What happened after Jesse drove away into the night?

What is the new ‘Breaking Bad’ movie about?

Rumors of a movie based on Breaking Bad have been circulating almost since immediately after the show ended. But now it appears that those speculations are true. Rather than a theatrical release, the Breaking Bad movie will be released on Netflix and AMC. And yes, it appears the film will focus on what happened to Jesse Pinkman.

Show creator Vince Gilligan is taking the lead on the project, teaming up with Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul veteran producers Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein. A project called Greenbrier in Albuquerque (where the original show was filmed) is believed to be a code name for the movie. There’s no release date yet, but actor Brian Cranston, who played Walter White on Breaking Bad, did confirm that the movie is happening.

What happens to Jesse? How does he go on without Walter White? These questions will finally have answers soon!
