The show begins with Alex Levy (Aniston) going through the trauma of losing her longtime partner of 15 years, Mitch Kessler (Carell). The series premiere opens with the firing of Mitch due to a sexual misconduct scandal.
Alex and Mitch were TV news anchors on a popular news program that broadcasts from Manhattan. It has excellent ratings; however, the higher-ups are worried about the fall-out from the loss of Mitch.
The producers of the show were planning to fire Alex when the scandal with Mitch came crashing down. They scramble to find a new co-host. Bradly Jackson (Witherspoon) becomes Alex’s partner, and the rivalry between the two becomes apparent.
Bradley is from a small town and shows very impulsive journalism. She questions Alex’s integrity and brings a new feel to the show.
What are critics saying about ‘The Morning Show’?
The critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes gives the show a 63%, while the audience ratings are higher, at 94%. It receives an 8.2 out of a scale of 10 on IMDb, where many viewers tell people to give the show a chance.
“The Morning Show is stylish and fast-paced,” wrote NPR, “the biggest project among nine original programs kicking off the new Apple TV+ service.”
“When The Morning Show finally gets its setup established,” writes the Atlantic, “and starts to grapple with the consequences and the meaning of what [Steve Carrell’s character] has actually done, the show finds some momentum.”
“Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, playing two women whose lives intersect after a catastrophic scandal,” wrote the Syndey Morning Harold, “are brilliantly cast and take strong but imperfect material and lend it a little old Hollywood gravitas.”
The reviews are mostly positive for The Morning Show. Critics love how fast-paced the show is, and feel that the actresses give fantastic performances.
