Will There Be a Fourth Season of ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’?

Another Halloween has come and gone, but The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will return sometime before the next Halloween, with at least one more season to go after that. The cloud behind that silver lining is that no one seems to know when the third season will start.

Return dates tend to be a little murky in Netflix world, whether you’re talking about Stranger Things or Dear White People. This is what happens when you don’t abide by a calendar as the conventional television networks do. Still, while we’re waiting, we can take a look at Sabrina’s past, present, and future.

A short history of the teenage witch

Sabrina the Teenage Witch first began life in the comic books back in October 1962. It was produced by the same folks who gave us Archie and Jughead and the gang, with that comic getting a hip update via the CW show Riverdale.

The hook was that Sabrina was pretty much an ordinary teen, except that her dad was a warlock, making Sabrina a half-witch. Like the Archie characters, Sabrina first jumped from the page to television with an animated series that ran from 1970 to 1974.

Then she got an update via the 1996 series Sabrina the Teenage Witch starring Melissa Joan Hart of Clarissa Explains it All fame. That series started life as a TV movie, then it became a live-action series that ran for seven seasons,  and it, too, spawned an animated series.

Because every generation needs its own Sabrina, the witch got an update again with the Netflix series that premiered in 2018. The reboot featured a much darker and moodier take starring Kiernan Shipka, who previously played Sally Draper on Mad Men and Bette Davis’ daughter in the miniseries Feud

Sabrina chills on Netflix

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina premiered on Netflix just before Halloween of 2018 and became an instant hit, making a star out of Shipka. Both seasons of the show and the Christmas movie A Midwinter’s Tale all scored highly on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus on the second season being: “Bewitchingly beautiful and wickedly macabre, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina casts an intoxicating spell and provides a perfect showcase for Kiernan Shipka’s magical talents.”

The first season saw Sabrina celebrating the milestone of a 16th birthday, but it’s not that sweet. On that birthday, she has to undergo a dark baptism where she must pledge allegiance to Satan. Sabrina is uneasy with this choice, which will separate her from her friends, and/or her family.

Season 2 left us with Sabrina and company fending off the Herald of Hell prophecy and with Sabrina regaining her powers. (Eleven from Stranger Things might want to talk to her.)

Cosmopolitan summed up the events this way “Aside from the Fright Club, Prudence and Ambrose are on the hunt for Father Blackwood, the Church of Night is in disarray, and Aunt Zelda has appointed herself High Priestess and head of The Academy of Unseen Arts.”

What’s in store for seasons 3 and 4?

Per Digital Spy, filming on season 3 is underway, although the premiere date has not been determined. But Cosmopolitan notes that filming on season 3 has wrapped, with the fourth season being in development.

And here’s the answer to the burning question about season 3: Yes, the Fright Club will be going to hell. Usually, that’s something to avoid, but with Sabrina, it’s a plus.

“I think it’s safe to say that we are going to Hell, yes,” creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told TheWrap at the Television Critics Association press tour. “We’re going to Hell. It’s very fun. It’s very fun. It’s dangerous, but it’s really fun.”
