For eleven years, Marvel has consistently been releasing films following the exploits of superheroes like Captain America, Iron Man, Ant-Man, and Spider-Man. All of it has been leading up to the April 26 release of Avengers: Endgame, which is highly anticipated by fans everywhere.
Knowing that Endgame is being touted as a grand finale for the Avengers, the public has started to wonder what’s next for Marvel, and when fans can expect to see new movies.
Spider-Man’s next outing
Even though Spider-Man’s future seemed uncertain following the events of Avengers: Infinity War, the doubt as to his fate was removed when a brand-new Spider-Man film was announced.
Set to release in July 2019, Spider-Man: Far From Home stars Tom Holland as the web-slinging hero, and co-stars Zendaya, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, and Jon Favreau, and also features newcomer Jake Gyllenhaal.
While little is known about the plot specifics, the Marvel website does reveal that Far From Home will take place after the events of Avengers: Endgame.
Fans can expect to see Peter Parker take a school trip to Europe with his friends, with the intention of taking an extended break from any superhero antics, but his plans are sidelined when he agrees to help Nick Fury tackle a mysterious menace.
‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ production drama
While Spider-Man: Far From Home is wrapped and in the bag, all set for the July release date, there’s another Marvel film that has been experiencing a lot of bumps in the road on the way to completion. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 has been on the docket for some time, with initial planning having started years ago. However, there have been several snafus, and now, it is quite uncertain when (or even if) the film will happen.
The drama really began in July 2018, when controversial tweets by director James Gunn came to light. Although the messages in question were years old, and the cast rallied to support Gunn, Disney fired him from the Guardians of the Galaxy 3 project.
For a while, the film was in limbo, with no announced director or cast. Then, in March 2019, Disney re-hired Gunn and announced that he would resume directorial duties on Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Initially, before Gunn was fired, the movie was set for release in 2020.
Following the drama with Gunn, the release date has been pushed back significantly, with no confirmed due date in place. It seems likely that the earliest fans can expect to see the film is sometime in 2022, as listed by the IMDb.
Another Guardians 3 issue – none of the cast members have yet been announced and with the way Avengers: Infinity War ended, fans aren’t even sure which of their favorite characters are still standing.
Is anything releasing next year?
Currently, there are no Marvel movies set for a 2020 release. This will mark the first time in eleven years that Marvel won’t have a brand-new film.
Even though it seems unlikely, there is a slight chance that the studio could come out swinging and get a movie in the pipeline for 2020. The most likely candidate would be the long-awaited Black Widow film, or possibly Black Panther 2, both of which would get fans out in full force.
The reality is that with no films currently scheduled for 2020, fans will have to get their Marvel fix in other ways. Even if there are no feature-length productions releasing next year, the much-anticipated Disney streaming service is set to feature several Marvel shows, including a Loki standalone series. With the release of Avengers: Endgame, Marvel will likely start releasing more information about their plan for the next several years of movies.
