The final episode of The Spanish Princess airs June 23 on Starz. But if you’ve fallen in love with the historical costume drama about the life of Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of Henry VIII of England, we have good news. The show, which the network originally intended to be a limited series, is coming back for Season 2.
The second season will focus on Catherine’s marriage to Henry
Season 1 of The Spanish Princess focuses on Catherine’s early life. It depicts her move to England, marriage to Prince Arthur, and how she copes after his death. Season 2 will explore what happens after she marries Arthur’s brother Henry.
The follow-up season will “tell the next chapter of Catherine of Aragon’s story as she negotiates war, politics and marriage to the most dangerous King of England,” said showrunners Emma Frost and Matthew Graham.
Adding eight more episodes to the series means getting the chance to explore Catherine’s life as queen and her complicated relationship with her second husband, who would eventually divorce her so that he could marry Anne Boleyn.
Here’s how Starz describes Season 2:
The Spanish Princess continues the story of Queen Catherine and Henry VIII. Presiding over the most glamourous court in Europe and beloved by their people, together they create an England that is proud, confident and can withstand the threat of foreign wars. But when Catherine struggles to produce an heir, her marriage and her life are under threat, and her past comes back to haunt her. Despite proving herself a politician, a diplomat, a national inspiration and even a military commander, Catherine must battle to save her love and her King and protect her adopted country from chaos.
Starz hasn’t announced a premiere date
Starz has yet to announced a premiere date for Season 2 of The Spanish Princess. However, we do know that Charlotte Hope, who plays Catherine, will return. So will Ruairi O’Connor, who plays Henry, along with other key members of the cast.
The Spanish Princess is the third series from the premium cable network to focus on the drama and intrigue of the English court in the 15th and 16th century. The White Queen, which aired in 2013, dealt with the Wars of the Roses. The White Princess focused on the marriage of Yorkist princess Elizabeth I and Henry VII, the first Tudor king. Frost has served as the showrunner for all three series. All are adapted from a series of novels by Philippa Gregory.
“Emma and Matthew have created an alluring portrait of one of the most familiar narratives in English history,” said Starz COO Jeffrey Hirsch. “Viewers are intrigued by Catherine of Aragon’s story and this eight-episode conclusion will give us the opportunity to tell it in its entirety.”
The season finale of The Spanish Princess airs June 23 at 8/7c on Starz.
