Will There Be A Season 2 of Netflix’s ‘The Politician’?

Season 1 of The Politician began airing on Netflix just last week, but already, we’re excited to talk about Season 2. That’s because, like so many Ryan Murphy productions, its an anthology series — well, sort of. Here’s what we know about the upcoming season of The Politician. (Some spoilers ahead.)

Who stars in ‘The Politician’ on Netflix?

This series is full of stars. There’s Tony-winner Ben Platt (Pitch Perfect) as Payton Hobart. Some of the other young adults alongside him are Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody), Zoey Deutch (Set It Up), and Laura Dreyfuss (Glee) as Astrid Sloan, Infinity Jackson, and McAfee Westbrook, respectively.

Then there’s the even more prominent older cast, featuring a few of Ryan Murphy’s usual stars. Jessica Lange (American Horror Story) plays Dusty Jackson, while January Jones and Dylan McDermott are Mr. and Mrs. Sloan. Finally, Gwyneth Paltrow portrays Payton’s mother, Georgina Hobart.

Here’s what ‘The Politician’ is about

The first season of the show sees Payton as a high school student in Santa Barbara running for student council president. He sees this as the beginning of his path to the White House, and he’ll stop at nothing to get there, but here are plenty of obstacles in his way.

For one thing, his running mate, Infinity, may or may not have cancer. Then, there’s the matter of his mostly apathetic family, his struggle to get into Harvard, and his complicated relationship with another student, River, who is also running. The race soon becomes more cutthroat than you can imagine.

OK, now it’s time for spoilers. After ruining his high school political career and chance to go to Harvard, Payton decides to abandon his dreams. He goes to NYU and embraces his talent for music, but he finds himself lost and depressed. Enter his old pal, McAfee, who has a career opportunity for him.

In the episode, “Vienna,” we meet Judith Light’s Dede Standish, a New York State Senator who is contemplating a run for Vice President. She has been unopposed in her current office for years, but now, Payton is going to swoop in and run again her. The episode ends with him announcing his candidacy.

There’s no word yet as to win Season 2 of The Politician will be on Netflix. But it is certainly on its way, as filming is set to begin this month. As for what’s going to happen, that’s mostly a mystery, too.

“We really don’t know [where the story is headed],” Platt told The Hollywood Reporter. “Every time we think we know, [creators Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk] really shock us. All I know is that it will be very much focused on mine and Judith’s race, and that we’ll be in New York now. And we’re theoretically a little bit older and coming into our own as adults.”

Since filming is about to kick off, we can expect that we’ll likely only have to wait about a year, or perhaps even less, for Season 2. We know that Platt and Boynton are returning, and most likely the others seen at the end, including Dreyfuss, Light, and Bette Midler, who portrays Dede’s campaign manager, Hadassah Gold.

As for who likely won’t be back, we can guess that Lange is out of the picture, as are McDermott and Jones. Paltrow could make an appearance, but she probably won’t be a series regular again. The main question is whether Deutch will come back into the picture. We’ll have to wait until 2020 to find out.
