Will There Ever Be a ‘Dexter’ Reboot?

Dexter is regarded as one of the best television dramas in history. The Showtime series, which ran for eight seasons between 2006 and 2013, debuted to critical acclaim and became a big hit among fans and critics alike. It received a slew of awards and many other accolades. But its controversial ending left many viewers disappointed and unsatisfied.

We haven’t heard much from showrunners since then, but considering we’re in the age of reboots and revivals, what are the odds that this series will be revamped?

What was ‘Dexter’ about and how did it end?

The series focused on Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a blood spatter analyst for the Miami-Dade Metro Police Department who lived a double life as a serial killer. His targets were bad guys who had “slipped through the cracks” of the criminal justice system.

Those closest to him — including his partner Rita and sister, Debra — had no idea of his other life. But his late father, Harry, did; in fact, he was the one who taught Dexter his code of ethics in an attempt to control the violent urges he had as a kid.

After watching Dexter commit dozens of murders over the years and seeing law enforcement becoming increasingly suspicious of him, fans expected Dexter to either be caught or killed. But instead, he faked his death and started a new life in Oregon as a lumberjack.

Many viewers were blindsided by the ending and felt that Dexter got off too easy. It’s been more than six years since then and fans still say it’s one of the worst television finales in history.

Will ‘Dexter’ be rebooted?

There have been talks about a potential Dexter reboot, with Showtime boss David Nevins saying in 2015 (via Complex):

Dexter is the only show that I would think about [continuing]. It’s a question of when the timing is right. If there’s a willingness to do it, I would certainly listen. Certainly, I’d look at Dexter.”

But Nevins noted that Hall would have to be on board with it, which could be a challenge given that the actor has expressed some skepticism about a revival in the past. But in a more recent interview with Variety, Hall offered fans a glimmer of hope, saying that he could “maybe” see himself return to his iconic character.

“It’s a possibility given how the show ended that we could revisit Dexter,” he explained to the outlet in 2018. “I have just yet to, for my part, imagine or hear someone else’s idea that makes it feel worth doing. But never say never.”

With the right script, it seems like a Dexter reboot could definitely be a thing. It just a matter of if or when that will happen.

What would Dexter be doing now?

Though it might’ve appeared that Dexter shook his murderous ways and started clean in Oregon, there’s a possibility that he could still be a killer. Hall teased this is a 2016 interview with E! News, saying: “I think Dexter’s dark passenger is still with him.” But he kept his comments on Dexter’s new life to a minimum.

While we await more information on a potential reboot, you can currently watch all eight seasons of Dexter on Netflix. You’re welcome.
