Will Two-Face Be in ‘The Batman’: Who Will Play Him?
Matt Reeves’ The Batman is quickly becoming one of the most highly-anticipated superhero movies slated for 2021. Though set to compete against a slew of Marvel installments predetermined to take the world by storm, The Batman boasts a cast and an approach sure to separate itself from earlier DC misfires.
The Batman will highlight Bruce Wayne’s detective nature — a facet usually downplayed to focus on his combat prowess — as the Caped Crusader comes up against several of his most infamous formidable foes.
So far, fans know that Paul Dano is set to portray Riddler, Zoë Kravitz will portray Catwoman, and Colin Farrell is rumored for Penguin. But, what about Two-Face / Harvey Dent?
Who is Two-Face, and why does he matter?
Two-Face — created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger — first appeared in Detective Comics #66. Two-Face is one of the Bat’s most iconic adversaries, and he is a part of the notorious Rogues Gallery.
A former Gotham City District Attorney, Harvey Dent goes insane after the left side of his face is permanently scarred following an attack involving acidic chemicals by mob boss Sal Maroni; consequentially, he becomes the villainous Two-Face. He quickly grows obsessed with the concept of duality and the conflict between good vs. evil.
Tommy Lee Jones played Two-Face in 1995’s Batman Forever and Aaron Eckhart previously portrayed the character in The Dark Knight; it’s hard to imagine a Batman movie with all the major villains excluding Dent. Thus, it should come as no surprise that the character will likely be cast in the upcoming movie.
Will Harvey Dent appear in Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman?’
We Got This Covered has reported that Poison Ivy, Firefly, Scarecrow, and Harvey Dent may all be making an appearance in the upcoming Matt Reeves movie. It’s virtually understood that Harvey Dent will be in the film.
We Got This Covered — relying on the same sources who knew a Green Lantern show was in development and that Mahershala Ali was supposed to play Jim Gordan in The Batman before dropping out (both confirmed) — reported that Warner Bros. is eyeing Matthew McConaughey for Dent.
While you may be jumping for joy, as other outlets have corroborated this rumor, it still remains just a rumor, as IMDb has yet to announce the casting on its page for the upcoming movie.
Will Warner Bros. go for a Harvey Dent standalone movie over an appearance in ‘The Batman?’
While McConaughey has yet to sign the dotted line, imagining him in the role is quite effortless. His portfolio points to a wide range when it comes to performing, and he is quite familiar with parts requiring rage, regret, and resentment at the center.
Considering Warner Bros. will allegedly be making standalone movies for several of DC’s most famous villains — with Lex Luthor possibly becoming president in a political drama — the studio could choose to hold out on his introduction.
The studio may be able to make more money off of a villain origin story focusing on the detective turned bad guy; however, here’s to hoping McConaughey appears as Dent in The Batman.
