‘Wonder Woman’ Fans Will Have To Wait Longer For ‘3’ and an Amazon Spin-Off Than They Did For ‘1984’
Wonder Woman 1984 is only six months away from premiering in theaters, yet director Patty Jenkins is already looking ahead to the next film in DC’s popular franchise. Jenkins worked fast to come up with a storyline for the Wonder Woman sequel, which brings Gal Gadot’s character into the 1980s. The upcoming film will undoubtedly be a success at the box office, but fans will have to wait a long time before Jenkins gets around to making Wonder Woman 3.
Jenkins talks ideas for the third installment
Jenkins and her team unveiled the first promotional trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 during a panel at CCXP. She went on to reveal that she came up with the storyline for the sequel while they were filming the first movie.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the director experienced the same surge of inspiration while working on Wonder Woman 1984. Not only does Jenkins know where the story is going, but she also has plans for an Amazon spin-off.
“We actually already know the whole story to [Wonder Woman 3] and then some because there is an Amazon [spinoff] movie as well and so we already have it all mapped out. It’s just a matter of will we change our minds and when,” Jenkins shared.
Jenkins worked hard to get Wonder Woman 1984 released without having a big gap between films. But to do that, she basically filmed both movies back-to-back and squeezed in a short project in the middle of it all.
While fans are likely thrilled at the prospects of getting a third Wonder Woman movie plus a spin-off, they will have to wait a lot longer following the sequel.
When will we get ‘Wonder Woman 3’?
During her panel, Jenkins cautioned the audience that the cast and crew of Wonder Woman will be taking an extended break between the second and third films. Everyone involved in the project is due for a break, and Jenkins does not want fans to get bored with the character by releasing too many films without some kind of hiatus.
She is also looking to explore a few other projects she has lined up, so taking a breather between Wonder Woman movies is a must for Jenkins and the cast.
“And I like doing other things in between. And Gal has other things to do. I never want to make decisions too far in advance. We have to see if we both feel like making the movie we think we want to make when the moment comes,” she stated.
Jenkins, unfortunately, could not give a timetable for when Wonder Woman 3 will premiere in theaters. She did, however, assure fans that it will be longer than two years, so fans might have to wait until at least 2022 before the next movie in the franchise.
Wonder Woman opened in theaters in 2017 and the sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, is set to be released next year.
What’s ahead for Wonder Woman?
Aside from revealing the new trailer at CCXP, Jenkins talked a little bit about her vision for Wonder Woman 1984.
After watching Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League get slammed by DC fans, Jenkins wanted to bring a lighter tone to the Wonder Woman franchise without sacrificing the action. Her tactic paid off as Wonder Woman made over $800 million at the box office.
When making the sequel, Jenkins wanted the movie to stand on its own, kind of like Indiana Jones and James Bond. This is something Warner Bros. pulled off in Joker, which earned over $1 billion in worldwide sales.
As far as the storyline is concerned, Wonder Woman finds herself very lonely in the 1980s, at least until her long lost lover, Steve (Chris Pine), comes back from the dead.
“In this movie, we find [Diana] in 1984 and [she] is quite lonely — she’s lost her friends and doing what she needs to do,” Gadot recently shared. “She’s helping mankind and saving them until something crazy happens to her.”
Who is the main villain in ‘1984’?
When it comes to the main villain in Wonder Woman 1984, Pedro Pascal will be making his debut as Maxwell Lord, Diana’s next big foe.
Maxwell is a wealthy businessman who seemingly played a hand in bringing Steve back from the dead. We do not know what the character is up to in the movie, but he is clearly got some evil plan in the works.
Fans will also see Kristen Wiig in the film as Barbara Ann Minerva. In the comics, Barbara eventually morphs into Cheetah, who is one of Wonder Woman’s biggest villains.
Robin Wright and Connie Nielsen are also reprising their parts of Antiope and Hippolyta, though their scenes will largely take place in flashbacks of Diana’s earlier days.
Wonder Woman 1984 is set to open in theaters on June 5, 2020.
