Derek Hough said acts need a combination of things to get a score of at least 85

The judge said there isn’t a secret to dancers making it this season of World of Dance. He did list a few things they need to be on top of to get in.

“There is no secret,” wrote Hough. “What is needed is a perfect combination of the ‘tions.’ Creation. Dedication. Innovation. Motivation. Preparation. The performance has to have to that ‘WOW’ factor.”

The acts obviously have to up their game in all of those aspects, but are the judges scoring differently too? “Not at all,” answered Hough. “At the end of the day we still judge on musicality, technicality, synchronicity, creativity, costumes, choreography.  We’re looking at the most competitive season ever on World of Dance.”

He would dance in Jennifer Lopez’s “Love Don’t Cost A Thing” video for a cute reason

By the time Lopez approached Hough to join the cast of World of Dance they already knew each other. “We had met, we have a lot of the same friends,” wrote Hough.

He also revealed what she is like as a boss. “Jennifer is amazing to work with,” answered the dancer. “She’s incredibly committed and passionate about every aspect of her life and it’s inspirational to be in the room with someone who is as devoted to her family as she is to her work.”

If he could go back in time to dance in one of her iconic music videos, which would it be? “‘Love Don’t Cost A Thing’ because that was the video that made me have a crush on her,” wrote Hough.

Hough said he’ll “never say never” when talking about a possible return to Dancing with the Stars

Before judging, Hough was competing on Dancing with the Stars. He did a good job considering he holds the record of the most wins on the show. There is some uncertainty around the show since it won’t be coming back in the spring.

Would Hough return if the next season turns out to be the last? “DWTS will always be my family and while I never say never right now I’m focused on World of Dance and my tour,” wrote Hough.

He revealed that there will be some familiar faces on tour with him. “There are a few from World of Dance like Charity Anderson, Audrey Case and Daniella Karagach, who will all have their moments. I didn’t want to just have backup dancers; I wanted them to be guest stars.”

The dancer has also been busy working with his partnership with U.S. Cellular for The Future of Good. He helped bring awareness to the 16 Kids Under 16 program where 16 young humanitarians were nominated to receive $10,000 toward their cause.

Hough wrote about the causes and kids that are being presented this year. “I had the opportunity to talk to many of the kids on a video call and had the chance to meet one of the recipients in person in Wisconsin – Cayden,” revealed Hough. “At just eight years old, Cayden has raised over $23,000 for the Platelet Disorder Support Association to raise awareness for those, like himself, living with Immune Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP)! It’s so inspiring to see how passionate these kids are at such a young age and I’m so impressed with all of them.”
