Would Meghan Markle Vote for Hillary Clinton If She Ran Again?
Meghan Markle is a well-known humanitarian who champions causes such as women’s empowerment and sustainability. As a royal, she is expected to focus on charity work and not take sides on political issues.
However, Markle is still an American citizen with the ability to vote in elections in the U.S., which makes many fans curious about where she stands in the presidential election.
A lot of people definitely wonder whether Markle voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and if the duchess would vote for her again. Here’s what we know about Markle’s views on politics.
Did Meghan Markle vote for Hillary Clinton in 2016?
Markle has not shared who she voted for in 2016, but in the months leading up to the election, she was open about her support for Clinton and dislike for Donald Trump. Thus, it is safe to say that she most likely did cast the ballot for Clinton.
Markle is a self-described feminist, and before becoming a royal, she had a blog where she shared many liberal viewpoints that did not align with Trump’s policies. Before the election, she also urged people — especially women — to vote for Clinton, calling Trump “divisive” and “misogynistic.”
“You’re not just voting for a woman if it’s Hillary (Clinton),” Markle said in an interview with Larry Wilmore. “Yes, you’re voting because she’s a woman, but certainly, because Trump has made it easy to see that you don’t really want that kind of world that he’s painting.”
Markle seems to still have maintained a dislike for Trump. She did not meet Trump when he visited the U.K. several months ago. Markle was technically on maternity leave at the time, though many fans interpreted her absence as a political statement.
Hillary Clinton recently showed support for Meghan Markle
Markle and Clinton seem to have positive opinions of each other because Clinton has come out in support of Markle as well.
In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, Clinton discussed Markle and the negative press the duchess has been receiving. “The way she’s been treated is inexplicable,” Clinton commented. “If the explanation is that she’s biracial, then shame on everybody.”
Clinton’s daughter, Chelsea, was also involved in the interview and said: “She proudly had a career first and has a voice that she thankfully continues to use. Anyone who has the temerity to break the mold of what has previously been established and expected often, unfortunately, receives criticism and bile that I don’t understand. We’ve seen this pattern repeatedly.”
Meghan Markle might not be able to vote for Hillary Clinton in the future
Given what we know about Markle’s political viewpoints, it seems likely that if Clinton ran for president again as the Democratic Party’s nominee, Markle would support her like last time.
However, the Duchess of Sussex actually would not be able to publicly support Clinton the same way she did in 2016.
For one thing, royals often are expected to remain neutral when it comes to politics. They technically can vote, but most of the higher-ranking royals choose not to in order to maintain their neutrality.
As such, it’s highly unlikely that we will see Markle advocating for any political candidates in the future. It has been reported that she did not vote in the midterm election in 2018 at all.
There’s a good chance that Markle is not too thrilled about this no-voting tradition in the royal family. She has talked a few times about the importance of voting.
For example, in a speech celebrating New Zealand’s 125th year of women’s suffrage, Markle said: “Suffrage is not simply about the right to vote but also about what that represents: the basic and fundamental human right of being able to participate in the choices for your future and that of your community, the involvement and voice that allows you to be a part of the very world that you are a part of.”
