Yes, Will Ferrell Will Star in This New ‘Lifetime’ Movie
Kristin Wiig and Will Ferrell will make a deadly adoption on Lifetime after all, and now the first teaser trailer for what is promising to be the best and funniest Lifetime movie ever has been released. After news first broke about this top-secret project between two of the best comedians in the business, Ferrell released a statement saying they were going to drop the movie since the element of surprise had been ruined. Whether he was just faking us out or Lifetime has talked him back into it, A Deadly Adoption is happening will premiere on the network Saturday, June 20.
Back in April reports came out that Ferrell and Wiig had secretly teamed up to make the Lifetime movie spoof A Deadly Adoption for Lifetime. In the movie Ferrell and Wiig play a “successful” couple who allow a young pregnant woman, played by 90210 actress Jessica Lowndes, to stay with them under the hopes that they’ll be able to adopt her child once she gives birth. The film spoofs the typical Lifetime format of making an over-the-top drama about domestic concerns and strange events that would never really happen to anyone. A Deadly Adoption was meant to celebrate Lifetime’s 25th anniversary.
After the news about the movie broke, Ferrell released a statement to EW saying, “We are deeply disappointed that our planned top secret project was made public. Kristen and I have decided it is in the best interest for everyone to forego the project entirely, and we thank Lifetime and all the people who were ready to help us make this film.” Lifetime responded by saying via E! that it was “still determining the fate of the movie.” Since those reports said that Deadly Adoption had already been filmed, it’s unlikely Lifetime was going to just let a massive project it had paid for, especially one generating so much publicity, die off.
Then at the beginning of this month there was confirmation A Deadly Adoption was going to air with a massive billboard on Hollywood Boulevard with the wonderfully nonsensical tagline “The birth of a plan gone wrong.” The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the original story, shared photos of the billboard.
Lifetime has embraced making fun of itself amidst its other bizarre programming, also airing the Christmas special Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever featuring the voice of Aubrey Plaza as the Grumpy Cat. That silly movie starred an Internet meme and poked fun at the Lifetime network while being overall campy and ridiculous. Will Ferrell is reportedly a big fan of Lifetime’s absurd programming and has been wanting to make a movie for the network for some time.
The trailer for A Deadly Adoption promises that the “dramatic thriller” is going to be hilarious. Lowndes runs Ferrell over with a truck while crying after he’s apparently been shot by Wiig. A hysterical female voice narrates, “We could’ve had everything. We could’ve had a happy life together. You’re selfish, a coward, and a liar, just like the rest of them.” If this movie turns out as wonderfully campy as the trailer, then we’re lucky that the nosey media didn’t make Ferrell really decide to scrap it.
