British comedy doesn’t always resonate with American audiences, but everyone loved Mr. Bean. The slapstick comedy sitcom was a hit in the ’90s and 2000s for adults and kids alike — and a huge part of that was due to the antics of actor Rowan Atkinson. Since the retirement of the character, however, many wonder what Atkinson is up to now — and you probably don’t realize just how much money he made from that single hit show, as well as his other business ventures post-Bean.

Most of his success was from Mr. Bean and Johnny English

A huge part of Mr. Bean’s charm was the simple fact that he barely spoke. Looper reminds us the character primarily communicated through big gestures, funny noises, and oddball physical cues, making him a modern Three Stooges type of everyman. And Atkinson’s approach here is really what made him millions, as he kept up playing Mr. Bean for 22 years on TV and on the big screen. 2011 was Atkinson’s final year taking the stage as Bean.

As for his other roles, Atkinson is also known for playing Johnny English in the 2003 British spy film that parodied more serious spy flicks, like the James Bond franchise. The movie was a huge success, grossing $160 million worldwide. For all his films and TV roles, which include Mr. Bean, Johnny English, Blackadder, and others, he’s helped bring in a total gross income of $618 million, says The Richest.

His production company and directing also brings in the cash

Atkinson’s no fool, despite how many times he’s played one on screen. And he has a highly successful production company, Hindmeck, that’s also known for bringing in serious money. The Independent reported in 1997 that his company was bringing in 1.9 million pounds annually, which is far above $2 million. And don’t forget — that was nearly 20 years ago.

At the time, Atkinson was the sole director of the company and his then-wife, Sunetra Sastry, was the company secretary. For a yearly salary, he was paying himself 1.34 million pounds (that’s over $1,700,000). And The Richest notes in total, the company has paid him over $16 million.

His properties are huge and lavish

Proving just how wealthy he is, Atkinson owns several properties all over England. And it appears one of his homes in North London — which is worth over $6 million, according to Daily Mail Online, is where his girlfriend, Louise Ford, moved in 2016. Their romance went public in 2014 after his previous marriage of 23 years abruptly came to an end.

As for his other properties, the publication notes he was also building a home in Oxfordshire worth over $14 million. And of course, he also had a mansion in the capital worth over $27 million.

It’s not just homes he invests in, either. DuPont Registry reports he has quite the car collection, too, which includes luxury vehicles like the McLaren F1, Aston Martin V8 Vantage Zagato, Acura NSX, Aston Martin DB2, and 1939 BMW 328. He did wreck his McLaren F1, in 2011, though, which cost him $2 million in repairs.

Total net worth

As for the grand total, it’ s estimated that Atkinson is worth $130 million, making him one of the richest comedians of all time. There are quite a few comedians that are worth more, however, like Jerry Seinfeld at $920 million, Matt Groening at $500 million, and Matt Stone at $500 million, Celebrity Net Worth reports. But even so, Atkinson has made quite a name for himself and still ranks as the 23rd comedian with the highest net worth. Not bad.
