You May Be Surprised By the ‘Today Show’ Co-Hosts’ Favorite Holiday Traditions
Now that the holiday season is in full swing, many people have started sharing their most treasured family traditions. From recipes to annual events, the list is endless when it comes to celebrating yuletide rituals.
Meteorologist Dylan Dreyer chose a sugary treat to share for this particular holiday-related Producer Challenge on Today. Some call it a ‘mold,’ some call it a ‘salad’ – regardless of the term, it involves Jell-O and it’s beloved by all!
“We always had this as a side dish to our savory meal. It tastes more like a dessert and I think that’s why us kids loved it so much,” Dreyer told Today.com of her childhood tradition that she continues today. “You could be sure no matter where we celebrated Christmas, my mom brought the Jell-O mold!” She included the recipe for her family’s Gelatin Delight Salad on the Today Show website.
Hamming it up
As a confessed carnivore and keto enthusiast, weatherman Al Roker is not shy about being a meat lover. With a penchant for cooking, Roker insists on having this delectable sweet roasted ham – specifically from Snake River Farms – each and every Christmas. He uses his own classic recipe which includes a pineapple glaze, along with savory bacon Brussels sprouts. Roker claims that whatever spin you may try to put on the holiday dish, it’ll taste like it’s from your neck of the woods.
Donning appropriate attire
Last year, co-host Craig Melvin showed his followers on Instagram how he and wife Lindsay – along with their kids Del, 5, and Sibby, 3 – get into the holiday spirit by getting into matching PJs. Melvin also shared that they opt to personally chop down a real tree each year over putting up a fake one. To him and his family, it’s worth the extra work. “We have the tree thanks to a team effort. The kids named it “Spencer Gerald” not sure why,” Melvin posted on Insta with a video of him securing this year’s selection, giving a shout out to his wife. “Thx to @lindsaycz for continuing he tradition.”
Can add kudos from Janet Jackson to her resume
After co-host Sheinelle Jones’ performance on the dance-themed Halloween edition of Today, it’s no wonder she chooses to show off her fancy footwork along with her kids as a way of decking the halls.
Embodying a Janet Jackson persona, Jones nailed a reenactment of Janet Jackson’s 1989 “Rhythm Nation” video for the October 31 broadcast of the show, complete with the infamous wardrobe and backup dancers. The Today co-host even received a video shout out from Jackson herself, which literally brought Jones to tears.
“Hey Sheinelle, Thank you for thinking of me and “Rhythm Nation” this year,” the music legend said. “I cannot believe it’s been 30 years since the album was released… I’m so glad you’re still enjoying it.”
Jones called the message from Jackson a ‘bucket list’ moment. “In my old basement, with the wood-paneled walls and green carpet, I had a tape recorder of that song, and I’d put a hat on and (dance),” she explained after seeing the praise from the music icon. “I was like 12 … this was bucket list, guys!”
For Jones, there’s no better way to family bond than to boogie. It’s probably a good bet that the journalist practices this tradition year round!
