You Won’t Believe the Nickname Princess Diana Was Called Growing Up
Members of the royal family are known to have all different nicknames for one another, from what Prince William and Kate Middleton call their children to Princess Eugenie’s nicknames for her parents to the different names everyone has for the queen.
The name she was called growing up
When she was a kid, Lady Diana Spencer’s friend began calling her “Duch,” which was short for duchess. It’s ironic that she was referred to that way because no one could have possibly known then that she would go on to become the Duchess of Cornwall when she wed Prince Charles.
The princess’ former chef, Darren McGrady, noted that was called that name growing up because “when she was younger she always acted like a Duchess.” And her childhood nickname stuck into adulthood as he heard other royals call her “Duch.”
“I remember Sandringham one Christmas. She came into the kitchen with Sarah Ferguson and Fergie called her ‘Duch,'” McGrady recalled.
Diana admitted that her sisters referred to her that way as well. In the National Geographic documentary titled Diana: In Her Own Words, the princess is heard on audio recordings describing a conversation she had with them about how nervous she was to marry Britain’s future king.
“I went upstairs, had lunch with my sisters who were there, and I said, ‘I can’t marry him. I can’t do this. This is absolutely unbelievable,’” Princess Diana said in the documentary. “And they were wonderful and said, ‘Well, bad luck, Duch. Your face is on the tea towel, so you’re too late to chicken out.’”
The nicknames Diana had for others including Camilla Parker Bowles
While Diana was given that nickname, she also had a few nicknames she gave to other people.
Prince Harry previously shared that his mother used to call Prince William “the wombat.”
“It began when I was 2. I’ve been rightfully told because I can’t remember back that far but when we went to Australia with our parents, and the wombat, you know, that’s the local animal,” Harry explained about how his brother got that name.
And when her sons went shooting on Boxing Day, Diana would call them her little “Killer Wales.”
But the princess also reportedly came up with an unflattering nickname for her husband’s mistress, Camilla Parker Bowles. In her book, Diana: The Last Word, the princess’ friend, Simone Simmons, wrote that Diana referred to Camilla as “the Rottweiler.”
Simmons claimed that Diana said she called her that “because she looks like a dog — and because once she has got her teeth into someone she won’t let go.”
