Zendaya Just Shared Her Biggest Concern for Tom Holland in ‘Spider-Man’
With the success of the last Avengers film and the hype from Spider-Man: Far From Home, Marvel fans are truly living their best lives in 2019. And while there may have been some disappointing Spider-Man films of the past, many can agree that Tom Holland is perfect the role. From his nerdy Peter Parker to his scene-stealing action sequences as the hero of the film, we can’t wait to see what he does next even after the hype from Far From Home dies down.
In addition to the film itself, many love Zendaya and Tom Holland’s relationship, too. Zendaya, who plays Spider-Man’s love interest in the film, has an incredibly close relationship with Holland in real life — and she recently expressed some personal concerns for her friend thanks to how his suit works.
Tom Holland and Zendaya have an ultra-close relationship on and off set
Not all co-stars get along, but Holland and Zendaya have an undeniable bond. The two have spoken about their close friendship in the past, and they’ve also been spotted hanging out together when the cameras aren’t rolling. Since the two are so close in age and have had similar experiences growing up in the public eye, it makes perfect sense that they’d get along as well as they do — though Zendaya did once express that she was worried her height would get in the way of her attaining the part of MJ in Spider-Man. Luckily, Holland being a bit shorter didn’t stand in the way of their chemistry.
Since Holland and Zendaya are so close, many assumed the two have been secretly dating as well. Holland posted this Instagram photo of him and Zendaya all the way back in 2016, and since then, fans have hoped this meant a romance was brewing. So far, Holland and Zendaya still maintain they’re just friends, however.
Zendaya expressed concern that Holland might choke in his suit
The Spider-Man suit is iconic, but Seventeen notes Zendaya expressed her concerns over Holland wearing the suit during an MTV News interview. Holland has noted before that the suit is completely one piece, so even drinking water is difficult. The actor told Entertainment Tonight that in order to hydrate, he has to use a straw that can go through the eye hole of the costume and down to his mouth since the eyes of the suit are detachable. It’s never really deterred him from playing the character, though — but Zendaya noted what scares her about Holland wearing the suit during her interview.
The actress said, “You know what I think about all the time that really scares me? Is like when he wears that mask that you can’t just take off cause it’s all like one piece.” She then added, “I get scared all the time, like, what if he’s working so hard that he throws up. And then he can’t— he chokes!”
Holland says this is actually the hardest part about playing Spider-Man
The suit certainly sounds difficult to maneuver in, but for Holland, it’s not the most difficult part of reprising his role as Spider-Man. Several years ago, CinemaBlend notes Holland said one of the hardest aspects of his role was not taking too much inspiration from the Spider-Mans that came before him. “It was very difficult to not obviously copy what Andrew and Tobey had done because what they did was so brilliant. I think our main difference is trying to make Peter feel like a kid and in the film you see a kid reacting to meeting the Avengers for the first time,” Holland told HeyUGuys.
While he may have been nervous to live up to expectations at first, Holland has officially played the role of Spider-Man/Peter Parker more than any other actor — and he told Den of Geek that he’s really settled into it. “And now I feel like Peter Parker is kind of an extension of myself. It’s a real joy playing him. What’s actually become as a bit of a shock is how I’ve made other movies now since playing him and it’s hard to shake him off,” the star said.
Will we see Holland as the famous hero again in another film? We’ll have to wait and see.
