Zoë Kravitz Takes Over the John Cusack Role in Hulu’s ‘High Fidelity’ Reboot
Nick Hornby’s much-loved 1995 novel High Fidelity is getting a gender-swapped reboot thanks to Hulu. On Wednesday, the streaming service revealed the first look at the upcoming 10-episode series. Future Catwoman Zoë Kravitz will portray Rob, the role played by John Cusack in the 2000 film adaptation.
Hulu’s ‘High Fidelity’ is set in Brooklyn
Hornby’s novel about a misanthropic record store owner looking back on his past relationships was set in London. The film adaptation, which featured Jack Black, Todd Louiso, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Lili Taylor in addition to Cusack, shifted the action to Chicago. Now, the new TV series — which will premiere on February 14, 2020 — moves to Brooklyn, with Kravitz playing the owner of a Crown Heights record shop.
In the show, Kravitz’s character — still named Rob — “revisits past relationships through music and pop culture, while trying to get over her one true love” while also running her store in a fast-gentrifying Brooklyn neighborhood. Da’Vine Joy Randolph and David H. Holmes will play friends of Kravitz’s character, while Jake Lacy plays her love interest.
The Hulu adaptation will maintain the spirit of Hornby’s novel while also updating the story for today.
“We, of course, had to modernize the world,” Kravitz told Entertainment Weekly. “Now we are dealing with people who are not only obsessed with pop culture, but also nostalgia.”
Kravitz says the ‘heart’ of her character is the same as in the book and movie
Though the main character’s gender has changed, that the switch didn’t mean completely reinventing Rob, Kravitz said.
“Surprisingly, I don’t think the character has changed much,” the actress explained. “Of course, it’s my own interpretation, but the heart of the character is very much the same. Changing the character from male to female did not change the kind of person we are dealing with.”
The actress has a connection to the ‘High Fidelity’ movie
Fans of High Fidelity will note that Kravitz has a special connection to the film adaptation. Her mother, Lisa Bonet, plays a musician named Marie De Salle with whom Cusack’s character has a fling.
“It feels really cool,” Kravitz said when speaking to Wonderwall.com about starring in a reboot of a movie that featured her mother. While she said that it was sometimes “strange” to see her parent in movies when she was a kid, High Fidelity was the exception. “[T]he thing about High Fidelity, for me, was that I always loved the movie — kind of regardless of the fact that my mom was in it. Almost in spite of the fact that my mom was in it,” she said.
“The source material is so wonderful and I think it’s such an interesting thing to look at this setting of a human being going through their relationship, through a female perspective,” Kravitz went on to say. “It’s something people are really going to enjoy seeing.”
