‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’: This Love Triangle Is Endless and Confusing

One recurring subplot in Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is the never-ending, utterly confusing love triangle between Max, Zoey, and Simon. Here’s Showbiz Cheat Sheet’s take on Zoey’s train wreck of a love life.

Zoey is infatuated with a man who is emotionally unavailable

Zoey has a big problem on her hands. She’s enthralled with a man at work who is emotionally unavailable (Simon). Zoey and Simon are really into each other, however, most of their conversations are about Simon’s deceased father. He’s still grieving his father’s death, which is getting in the way of him moving forward with a romantic relationship.

Another problem? Simon was engaged when they started their flirtation. However, Zoey and Simon got just a little too close, and his fiancée broke up with him during their engagement party. The night before the party, he had a lapse in judgment and went to Zoey’s apartment. They almost kissed, but Zoey stopped it before things got out of hand.

Zoey pushes away a man who is in love with her and would do anything for her

Another part of this love triangle is Max, a co-worker Zoe runs hot and cold for. Max is deeply in love with Zoey (he confessed his love through a carefully orchestrated flash mob), but she doesn’t seem to be that into him. Zoe sees Max as a friend, but he wants more than that. He’s been hoping Zoey would finally come around, but his patience is wearing thin.

Before things got tense between him and Zoey, Max would go out of his way to do things for her to make her life easier. In one episode, Zoey needs to get home and check on her dying father after he had a fall. Unfortunately, there were no taxis available. Max intimidates a guy to the point where he gives up his scooter. He then scoots away with Zoey so they can quickly come to the aid of her dad. This is just one of the many things Max has done for Zoey.

Zoey seems to have feelings for both Max and Simon

Although Zoey has friendship feelings for Max, deep down there is love there. In one episode, Zoey sings “I’m Yours” to Max, which further confuses him. He begins to think he might have a chance with her, only to walk in on her singing “I Want You to Want Me” to Simon. Max concludes that Zoey loves him but she’s passionate about Simon. Sure, Zoey might have love for Max, but it doesn’t seem like it’s the romantic kind.

Will Zoey ever figure out what she wants?

We sure hope Zoey chooses someone soon. All this back and forth has us dizzy. Zoey has been dragging out this love triangle for most of season 1 and we’re tired. Pick someone already, Zoey. Either choose your person or leave them both alone.
