Zoey (Jane Levy) and Max’s (Skylar Astin) friendship has been on the rocks for quite some time. They were close friends and co-workers, but Max began to develop feelings for Zoey. Things got awkward between the two after Zoey heard one of his “heart songs.” Max professed his love for Zoey with a surprise flash mob during their lunch break, but it didn’t go over well. After Zoey explained she didn’t want to pursue a romantic relationship, their friendship and work relationship began to fall apart. Max was heartbroken and he took it out on Zoey.

Fast forward a few episodes later, and Max and Zoey are working on becoming friends again. Zoey tries to patch things up with him after Joan and Ava (fierce work enemies) decide to work together instead of fighting. Zoey uses this as an opportunity to approach Max about resuming their friendship. Max agrees, but he still seems hesitant about moving forward.

In an unforeseen turn of events, Ava fires Max shortly afterward. She’s upset because Max allowed Leif, who has a history of insubordination, to join the team. Word got out that Leif was feeding code to another team member, so Ava blames Max for making a bad hire.

Will Max use Zoey so he can keep his job?

We have a feeling Max will be quite eager to resume his friendship with Zoey. Since Ava fired him, he might decide he wants to be friendly with Zoey again so he can improve his chances of getting his job back. Zoey used to be his manager, so this is the easiest way for him to guarantee he gets to work again. The only question is, will Zoey wake up and realize what’s going on, or will the chaos in her personal life blind her to Max’s true intentions?

If Max forces a friendship with Zoey so he can secure employment, chances are Zoey will eventually find out. Ever since she acquired the power of being able to hear people’s inner thoughts through song, she’s aware of how people are feeling. Once Max’s plan comes to light, this could be the end of their friendship for good. On the other hand, Zoey has been dishonest with Max in the past. When she discovered he had romantic feelings for her, she lied about a prior engagement and canceled their dinner plans. She then set Max up on a date with the local barista, Autumn (that relationship crashed and burned). Considering this situation, Zoey wouldn’t have much of an excuse to stay angry with Max. In a way, they would be even.

What’s next for Zoe and Max?

In the preview for Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist Episode 12 (titled “Zoey’s Extraordinary Dad”), we see Max and Zoey sitting on the couch. They seem to be having a moment. At one point, Max says, “I just don’t want to go backward, Zoey.” We’re not sure what he means by that, but Zoey looks happy they’re sitting together and talking. We’re interested to see how this plays out.
