After nearly ten years, a sequel to Zombieland is officially moving forward. The project had previously been discussed, but today’s the first time we received confirmation that it’s definitely happening. So what do we know about this sequel so far? Let’s break down everything we know.
Which members of the cast are back?
Pretty much everyone that you’d want to return for the sequel is back. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, and Abigail Breslin are all returning.
Stone and Eisenberg, in particular, have really exploded in popularity since the original Zombieland, with Easy A and The Social Network coming out a year later. Still, these stars have made time in their busy schedule for the sequel. In fact, the president of Columbia said that “no one wanted to see it happen more than Emma, Woody, Jesse, and Abigail.”
When’s it coming out?
The film is currently scheduled to begin production in January 2019 and hit theaters in October 2019. This would mean it will be out in time for the original film’s 10-year anniversary.
What’s the plot?
We don’t have much yet, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, “The new movie will once again put the focus on comic mayhem, taking the quartet from the White House to the American heartland as they face off against new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors. But, most of all, according to the studio, they have to face the growing pains of their own snarky, makeshift family.”
For what it’s worth, Slash Report released some possible plot details about the sequel earlier this year, and what they reported seems to sort of fit with what we’ve learned today. For one, they said the sequel will see the group traveling across the country to find Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) after she runs away; this fits with the official plot description that the group travels “from the White House to the American heartland.”
Additionally, Slash Report claimed that in this film, the original zombies don’t exist anymore, but they’ve been replaced by super zombies, who are “giant, muscular, incredibly tough beings.” This fits with the official plot description mentioning that the zombies have evolved since the first film.
What’s the title?
Well, if that article from Slash Report is correct, the name of the movie will be Zombieland Too. Even if this is accurate, though, there’s always a chance this could change before the film’s release.
Who’s directing it?
Ruben Fleischer, the director of the original Zombieland, is returning for the sequel. Fleischer helmed the upcoming comic-book film Venom for Sony, and they were apparently impressed by his work.
Who’s writing it?
Just as director Ruben Fleischer is returning, so are writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. As with the actors, the careers of Wernick and Reese have really taken off since the original Zombieland, as they went on to write both Deadpool movies.
When will it take place?
There’s definitely going to be a time jump between movies, though we don’t know exactly how long it will be. In a Reddit Ask Me Anything, Wernick and Reese said, “Abigail Breslin is 9 years older than she was in Z1, so it won’t be happening directly after! Can’t say beyond that!”
Stay tuned for more information about the sequel to Zombieland.
