As 2016 is finally upon us, we reflect back on the past year in celebrity style. Here we look at those who really made their mark not only professionally this past year, but also in the name of personal style. Here are our top 5 picks for this year’s heavy hitters who really deserve an A+ in style.
1. Eddie Redmayne
Starting the year off with a bang winning an Oscar for his role as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, he has not only been praised for his on-screen chops, but for his smart casual style. He’s been seen on some best dressed lists, and this year he raised the style stakes — from wearing classic knit sweats to different kinds of work jackets, Redmayne looks smart in all aspects of his life. True to his British roots, Redmayne does tailoring and off-duty prep like no one else, knowing how to perfectly pair khaki color chinos with knits and loafers, with the same ease as a pair of sneakers. In short, Redmayne knows how to expertly pull off high-low in a refined way for any occasion.
2. Jamie Dornan
After the much anticipated (more so for the ladies) release of pseudo-erotic romp Fifty Shades of Grey, Northern Ireland native Dornan became a household name in 2015 as antagonist Christian Grey. This former male model for Abercrombie & Fitch definitely knows a thing or two about fashion, moving effortlessly from off-duty athleisure looks through tonal smart-casual to full-blown formal ensembles. Not to mention that Dornan is a proponent of the short beard and stubble so when it comes to staying on top of grooming trends, Dornan is right on point.
3. Michael B. Jordan
From an acting standpoint, Michael B. Jordan has come a long way, first appearing on screen as young drug dealer Wallace in The Wire, and this year the rising star shot even higher thanks to his performance as Adonis Creed — the son of late Rocky Balboa nemesis-turned-friend Apollo Creed in the movie Creed. While there’s no arguing with his acting chops, it’s the 28-year-old’s stand out style that should really be applauded. Wearing a fine blend of statement suiting and slick casual ensembles, he’s never met a pattern he didn’t like. We’re all going to model our own off-duty style after Jordan’s because he really knows what looks good on his body type.
4. Kanye West
No best-dressed list would be complete without Sir Yeezy himself, aptly named GQ’s Most Stylish Man of 2015. This year not only marks the birth of his son who has the most awesome name on the planet — Saint West — but also Yeezy Season 1, his highly anticipated clothing line, which was released this fall. In addition, there’s been plenty of buzz about forthcoming album SWISH. But this year, Kanye took his style up a notch, not only rocking the pieces he wears best — sweats, jeans, and boots — but he’s added in statement fabrics and show-stopping silhouettes that demand just as much attention as the man himself does. We will always admire a man who can not only pull off fur but also leather pants and sneakers with the same ease as a pair of sweatpants.
5. Justin Theroux
Theroux truly deserves a spot on this list for his undeniable and highly personal style. Theroux, who got his start in David Lynch’s surrealist films Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire, will be starring in 2016’s Zoolander 2 (which he also co-wrote), so to say his star is rising is an understatement. A true devotee to the color black, he manages to walk the line perfectly between refined and roughed up rock ‘n’ roll. He knows how to nail head-to-toe neutral, how a suit should be tailored to fit, and knows a thing or two about motorcycles.
