Halloween is almost here, and for those of you who don’t really see yourselves going out and buying a gimmicky costume to wear for one evening, you’re not alone. Makeup, masks, and the pressure to wear something outrageous can be more cumbersome than enjoyable and can inspire dread for any man who wants to steer clear of looking ridiculous. You’re supposed to have fun and feel comfortable on Halloween, not be afraid to look in the mirror. Don’t fret: There are some fantastic costume ideas that may already be lurking in your closet. Here are some of the best DIY costumes you can put together from your closet, your friend’s closet, or from a local thrift store.
1. Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) from Back to the Future
In honor of the 30th anniversary of Back to the Future, as well as Back to the Future Day (October 21), which is the day Marty and Doc went to the future (which is now in the past!), dress up as Marty McFly; it’s the perfect homage to this cult classic. Great scott! To get the look down pat wear this (DeLorean not included):
- Men’s red puffer vest
- Dark wash jeans
- White checkered Oxford shirt
- Pair of white Converses
- Larger denim jacket
2. Jerry Seinfeld from Seinfeld
Our favorite comedian and yours, Jerry Seinfeld, circa Seinfeld is the classic ’90s normcore look that is so easy to emulate. The blandness of his style is what makes it so iconic, and not to mention that it’s Seinfeld! The only prop you’re going to need is a mic to really drive home the idea and to avoid having to field questions like “Who are you supposed to be?” Extra points if you keep some classic Jerry Seinfeld bits in your pocket to round out your look. Going to your local thrift store may be just what you need to really nail classic Seinfeld.
- Turtleneck (to tuck into your jeans)
- Higher rise jeans (A thrift store find is better)
- Sports jacket
- White Reebok sneakers
3. Steve Jobs
In keeping with a similar outfit type, why not go as the late, great Steve Jobs? If you go as the late Apple genius, you’ll have more of an excuse to be attached to your iPhone all evening, without question. This look is the easiest to throw together. Add a pair of rimless round glasses for extra authenticity.
4. Mark Zuckerberg
Why not go as the Facebook founder and noted successful man who wears the same outfit all the time? Perhaps the only thing this relaxed outfit needs is a name tag that identifies you as Mark Zuckerberg. Make sure to update your status as such before you go out and rock this bummy-looking outfit.
5. Holden Caulfield from the book The Catcher in the Rye
The book we were forced to read at some point in our academic careers also happens to have one of our favorite coming-of-age literary characters. This look is the most fun to pull off (fake cigarettes optional). Just look out for the phonies. (Added bonus: This costume is seasonally appropriate.)
- Harris tweed Jacket
- Stretch tapered jeans
- Checkered trapper
- Thick check scarf
- Basic t-shirt
- Snaffle loafer
