It can be hard to get out of a color rut and try something new. But there is no better time than now to venture into some colorful clothing combinations — nothing over the top of course — to brighten the longer nights of winter and perk up your cold-weather blues. In fact, wearing a little bit of color can boost your mood and your attitude during this dark time of the year.
“We react on multiple levels of association with colors — there are social or culture levels as well as personal relationships with particular colors,” explains Leslie Harrington, executive director of The Color Association of The United States, which forecasts color trends, to The Huffington Post. “You also have an innate reaction to color. For example, when you look at red, it does increase your heart rate. It is a stimulating color. This goes back to caveman days of fire and danger and alarm.” No matter the reaction, a reaction is better than no reaction when it comes to color-coordinating and trying different, stimulating color combinations. Here are our favorite picks — your wardrobe should include at least a few of these color combos.
1. Mauve and indigo
At first glance, this color combo might sound confusing, but in fact, it’s the most subtle and doable way to incorporate color into your wardrobe. The thought of any lighter shade of purple might freak you out a bit, but don’t be afraid, you can make it work, says GQ.
2. Grey and red
For the man who is truly dedicated to his neutral colors, especially his shades of gray (no pun intended), adding in a pop of red is sure to brighten your mood.
3. Cobalt blue and olive
If you’re a man with blue eyes and you wear cobalt blue, watch out — we guarantee you’ll be turning heads. And when paired with an olive green, you’ll have one amazing-looking outfit.
4. Sand and cream
This is the most natural and neutral of the color combination outfits and embraces this season’s camel color trend perfectly. Although this pairing can seem like it’s more of a fall color combo, it can work expertly for winter if you throw in a third color to the mix, say black, dark denim, or olive. The Zoe Report expertly suggests this color combo for a time when the season of monochrome is upon us.
5. Ochre and orange
This color combo is not for the faint of heart. You need to be a very bold, confident person to pull this combo off. If it’s a little too outrageous for you, you can also try incorporating orange into an accessory instead, says GQ, to lessen the shock but still keep you stylish.
