They say that two heads are better than one, and that’s definitely true when it comes to Halloween. Picking out a couple’s costume is an unspoken rite of passage: Not only are you celebrating (and perhaps flaunting) your partnership to the rest of the party, you’re also discovering your girlfriend’s (or boyfriend’s) level of creativity. And let’s be honest, there’s no better person to up your costume game with than your other half. The downside? While your costumes ooze innovation, you find yourself stuck with the end of the sartorial stick. In 2008, you donned your stuffy work suit to channel your inner Chuck Bass while your girlfriend had loads of fun carefully selecting a high-octane headband to be Gossip Girl’s Blair Waldorf. And last year, the same boring suit served as President Fitz’s uniform while she piled on stylish layers for Scandal’s Olivia Pope. Not this year. It’s no secret that the key to a successful relationship is compromise, so a Halloween costume that is fashion-forward for both you and your partner is a must. Read on for six chic couple’s costumes your significant other will also love.
1. Danny and Sandy from Grease
Sure, this costume idea may not be the most unique; however, it’s undeniable that dressing up as the cutest couple from Rydell High is a super stylish option. And just like Danny and Sandy, this costume is perfect for the couple who loves to go out and dance the night away – though your moves have most likely evolved from the Hand Jive. Whether your lady opts for the poodle skirt or slick pantsuit version of Sandy, your costume remains the same.
Simply layer a leather jacket over a white or black T-shirt and couple with a pair of black skinny jeans. Leave your footwear simple and comfortable by sticking with your black Converse sneakers. Or, if you want to give this ensemble a more individual twist, dress up as Sandy and Danny from the prom. Your beau can easily find a dainty, light pink dress from a thrift store, and your ensemble can be as easy as a pink dress shirt, fitted black trousers, and your black brogues. Just don’t forget to sculpt your mane with loads of hair gel. Besides his T-Birds jacket and “Greased Lightning” car, Danny’s perfectly coiffed mane is his most prized possession.
2. Bert and Ernie from Sesame Street
Whether or not the rumors are true about Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie being an item, one thing’s for sure: They are a dynamic duo. With the majority of your costume already in your closets – or readily available at a thrift store – couples who are scrambling for a great last-minute ensemble will love this idea. Ernie’s outfit, for example, is as easy as pulling out your horizontally striped sweater, jeans, and colorful Converse sneakers out from hiding. For a finishing touch, carrying around a small rubber ducky and spiking your hair up with some gel will really help covey the inspiration.
Leave Bert’s costume for the partner who wears several layers at all times: A white turtle and vertically striped V-neck sweater can get very warm quickly. Style this double-layered top with a pair of army green pants (good thing you save those cargo pants from 2003) and saddle shoes. On the beauty front, use some hairspray and gel to have your hair defy gravity and draw a temporary, Bert-approved uni-brow with an eyeliner pencil that can be picked up at your local pharmacy.
3. Beyoncé and Jay Z
Nothing says “we are a power couple” quite like dressing up as America’s (unofficial) royalty: Beyoncé and Jay Z. A force to be reckoned with alone, and unstoppable when together, dressing up as the Carter family is an obvious yes for the couple who cares about work just as much as they care about each other. Your woman will love the bevy of Yoncé-approved costumes to choose from, and you will be partial to this idea for its cool urban style. And who doesn’t want to be Young Hov for a night?
Dressing up as the rapper-turned-mogul is as simple as sporting a fitted sweatshirt in a neutral hue and a pair of black jeans; however, this costume is all about the accessories. Layer on a thick gold chain for and toss on a baseball hat – preferably with the New York Yankees or Brooklyn Nets logo – to fully capture Jay’s empire state of mind. Whatever you do, don’t forget those Timberlands or crisp white sneakers – a true Jay Z wannabe would never be seen without a pair of fresh kicks. And major kudos if you and your Queen B memorize “Drunk in Love” as preparation.
4. Wayne and Garth from Wayne’s World
Not to sound conceited, but you and your significant other are always the funniest couple in the room. While most couples are borderline nauseating with their mushiness, your fun banter and laugh-out-loud pranks are breathes of fresh air. So why would you two ever be cheesy on Halloween? Instead, channel your inner comedians by dressing up as another funny twosome: Wayne’s World‘s Wayne and Garth. No matter which slacker friend you decide to be, the costume is an easy, cooler (read: grungy) alternative.
Wayne’s black t-shirt and jeans are most likely already in your closet waiting to be worn. And unless you’re a Saturday Night Live enthusiast, you probably don’t have Wayne’s infamous hat lying around. Luckily, this will most likely be available on an online party site. As for Garth, this costume is as easy as sporting your cozy flannel shirt (with a baggy T-shirt underneath), a pair of jeans, and some thick-rimmed glasses. If you (and your beau) have 20-20 vision, pick up a prescription-free pair at your nearest party store. If you want to go the extra mile – which will merits lots of laughs – invest in a long brown or blonde wigs for each character.
5. Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey from 50 Shades of Grey
If you and your main squeeze were together at the time, she (or he) probably coerced you into seeing 50 Shades of Grey on Valentine’s Day. Even if she failed to bribe you with a large tub of popcorn, we know there was probably a strong attempt. Whether or not you saw (and liked) the movie, this idea is a funny and topical must for the couple who prefers snuggling up to their Netflix more than they like going out and about.
While your partner will most likely wear a conservative sweater, jeans, and riding boots, the fun of this costume lies with Christian Grey. Forget that ho-hum suit the businessman sports and pull out a pair of ripped jeans and a white T-shirt. Don’t have jeans that are torn to “play room” perfection? Take a pair of worn jeans and rub them against a coarse surface such as concrete. If you dare to accessorize with some X-rated add-ons, head over to your nearest party store and pick up a fake whip.
6. Orange Iguanas from Legends of the Hidden Temple
Rest assured gents: A couples costume doesn’t always mean you must emulate a famous twosome. Instead, you can easily dress up as anything that comes in a pair: peanut butter and jelly as well as salt and pepper are great options for foodies. But with running leggings (or shorts) and sneakers as essentials for this costume, dressing up as a team from Nickelodeon’s ’90s game show Legends of the Hidden Temple is perfect for that outdoorsy couple.
While duplicates of the team shirts can be purchased for less than $20 online, you can easily find all other accessories at your local department store: An inexpensive helmet and elbow pads are sporty additions to your shirt and leggings. Hitting the town with other couples? Allow them to join in on this costume by sporting other team’s uniforms: Red Jaguars, Purple Parrots, Blue Barracudas, Green Monkeys, and Silver Snakes.
