An Outfit for Any Occasion: 3 Looks to Get at Banana Republic
Banana Republic is known for its upscale business/casual uniform and undeniable quality. Interestingly, Banana Republic started as a safari-themed store in San Francisco in the late 1970s, and it was a decade later that it was purchased by The Gap, which then transformed it into the upscale brand that it is today. Banana Republic is all about cashmere sweaters, shiny baubles, refined leather brogues, and monochromatic collections that keep even the least fashion-savvy man handsomely clothed.
There remains one connection to its safari-themed past: It still guides its customers on a journey. Global CMO Catherine Sadler explained this journey to Forbes during an interview at the retailer’s flagship store in New York City: During BR’s early years you used to shop for safari; now you shop to get yourself ready for a promotion or a new love.
Truly pinpointing what BR is like today, Jaime Katz, an analyst with Morningstar, said to Ad Age that the brand has shifted its focus in recent years, raising its price points and appealing to more working men and women, thus becoming a step up from casual apparel. “Banana Republic has become a little bit more polished and work-focused,” Katz said. “[Work wear] is a lot less cyclical than leisure wear. And you can penetrate an audience that has dollars allocated to apparel.” Additionally, partnerships with TV’s Mad Men, the movie Anna Karenina, and designer Trina Turk are indicative of the brand’s evolved aesthetic that continues to change with the times, especially with its promotion of the brand through social media.
