Merriam-Webster added the term “athleisure” to its dictionary earlier this year, a nod to the not-so-passing trend, which has won over our hearts and our closets. The casual-yet-chic style, which is appropriate for more than just the gym, first captured attention thanks to Lululemon, a Canadian, yoga-inspired athletic apparel company. Since then athleisure has continued to gain popularity, and its status was solidified with the launch of Net-A-Sporter, a subcategory of luxury e-commerce site Net-A-Porter, and a brick-and-mortar Tory Burch Sport store on Madison Avenue in New York City.
Today, athleisure is the wardrobe of choice for models off-duty like Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, and Kendall Jenner. We’ve also seen full-fledged collections at New York Fashion Week last spring by pop culture mavens Kanye West and Rihanna. So what is athleisure and how can you incorporate it into your everyday life? Here are some tips and tricks to get you started.
Whether you’re sweating it out at the gym or running errands around town, Beyoncé and Topshop’s Ivy Park leggings are for you. Available in three shapes I (low-rise), V (mid-rise), and Y (high-rise), these leggings are cut from double-faced fabric and complete with inbuilt contour briefs for a sculptured effect. Tailor your leggings to your needs and choose from an array of lengths — full, cropped, and capri — to flatter every figure.
Designer Shayne Oliver is the master of androgyny. His signature hoodies for Hood by Air, which was established in 2006, are equal parts feminine and masculine. Cut in standout shapes and printed with the label’s signature HBA acronym, look no further if a cozy cover-up is what you are looking for. Throw it on before dashing out the door to keep you warm as the crisp air creeps up to you this fall.
3. Sports Bra
Victoria Secret’s versatile sports bras give you the support you need without ever sacrificing style. These affordable pieces take a leaf from Victoria Secret’s classic lingerie designs and come in various padded varieties updated with innovative front-close technology. They’re so comfortable you’ll want to wear them all day, every day. Pair one of these sports bras with a relaxed tank top for a cheeky, peek-a-boo look this weekend.
This summer, white and green took over street style. Adidas’s Stan Smith, originally a tennis shoe from 1963, has been spotted on supermodel Gisele Bündchen on the cover of Vogue and even on the runways at Alexander Wang’s spring/summer 2015 show. To date, Adidas has partnered with brands like RAF Simons, White Mountaineering, and Wings+Horns to design special editions of the sneakers. Get yours while they’re hot!
5. Crop top
Show off your toned summer body in an easy and sporty crop top. Appropriate for brunch with the girls, music festivals, the beach and everything in between, there is no better way to enjoy the last few hot days. Take the trend one step further and try this season’s most coveted style — off-the-shoulder. We like this one from Rosetta Getty. To highlight bronze shoulders and sun-kissed skin, stick to neutral colors like white and cream.
6. Yoga Pants
Last but certainly not least, we have Lululemon yoga pants. Designed for the those who believe yoga is more than just a workout, these soft pants, made from Nylon and Lycra, are stretchy and moisture-wicking. The breathable pants also offer a hidden signature waistband pocket for your locker key or credit card. Practical and snug? We are never taking them off.
