Perhaps you were just invited to a cool Halloween party or maybe you’ve been so swamped at the office you haven’t had time to think about the spooky season. Whatever the reason is, we’re officially days away from Halloween and you don’t have a costume. Never fear, dear reader: We’re here to help. If you’re in a pinch, the seven costumes below are creative, topical, and above all, easy to put together in a moment’s notice.
1. The Bachelor contest
Love it or hate it, each season of The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, and Bachelor in Paradise receives an average of 8 million viewers per episode, so it’s pretty much always culturally relevant. So why not dress up as a Bachelor contestant for Halloween? Simply throw on your typical going out look — fitted dress, heels, perfectly coiffed hair, and some serious eye makeup — pick up a red rose from your local bodega on your way to the party. For a comedic twist, smudge your makeup and carry a bunch of tissues, and you can be a heartbroken Bachelor contestant.
2. An Emoji
Unless you’ve been living under a rock since 2009, you not only have Emoji downloaded on your iPhone or Android, you have your favorite emoticon (who doesn’t love the salsa dancer)? Luckily, your favorite can double as a fuss-free Halloween costume. For example, spending the spooky holiday as the “Information Desk” emoji is as easy as throwing on a pink or purple sweater and blow drying your hair straight. If people don’t guess your costume immediately, just strike the iconic pose.
3. Snapchat Filter
Put all the time you spend Snapchatting your friends to good use and go out as a filter. There are tons of options you can choose from (deer, puppies, face swap), but the easiest option is channeling your inner flower crown filter. Just pick up a flower crown from your local costume shop — with all the hippie outfits available, it should be easy — and wear whatever you normally would. Just don’t forget to take a couple selfies.
4. Hamilton Superfan
You might’ve heard about a little musical called Hamilton. It swept the Tonys, picked up a Grammy along the way, and has been the hottest ticket in Manhattan since it opening last year. While millions have wanted to be in “the room where it happens,” the majority of Hamilton superfans haven’t even seen the musical, which makes this option a great costume for 2016. To dress up as an eager fan camping outside the Hamilton theater, just dress in your comfiest sweats and print out a makeshift Playbill. Or go the extra mile by lugging a lightweight sleeping bag to the party. If you know a couple songs from the musical phenomenon, all the better.
5. Ivanka Trump
There’s no denying there will be Donald Trumps a plenty this Halloween. There may even be some pussybow-clad Melanias running around. If you want a costume that’s just as timely but not as ubiquitous, why not dress up as Ivanka Trump? After all, you probably have everything you need for the costume in your closet. Wear your best business attire — whether that’s a blouse and slacks or a conservative shift dress — and throw on a pair of heels. Blow dry your hair straight and carry an American flag around all night. Trust us, your costume will be “YUGE.”
6. David Bowie
We lost a lot of historic actors, athletes, and musicians this year, including the great David Bowie. In addition to his wildly catchy tunes, Bowie was known for his outré outfits, making now a better time than any to pay your respects to the iconic artists. While there are so many memorable looks to choose from, copying his Ziggy Stardust makeup is the easiest option. Pick up a cheap face paint palette from your local drugstore and enlist your makeup savvy friend to help you. As for the outfit, you can wear a black top, pants, and heels. It’s that easy.
7. Taylor Swift
From her recent feud with Kimye to #HiddleSwift, Taylor Swift received a lot of heat from both the media and fans this year, which makes dressing up as her a great idea. Pull your favorite fit-and-flare dress out of hiding and style with some flats and a jean jacket. Straighten your hair and sport Taylor’s iconic red lip and cat eye makeup. For a comedic touch, carry a couple stuffed animal cats around — we all know how much Taylor loves her cats.
