Best Men’s Swimwear for Summer 2015: From Under $50 to Over $100
Not long ago, the capri-length, cargo-pocketed board short was the trendy swimsuit to wear. Luckily, times have changed, and men’s fashion has moved away from baggy styles, especially for swimwear. Today, the look is shorter, more basic, and with fewer pockets. The general rule is that your swimsuit should land above your knees, but shorter guys will want to wear something a little shorter, and taller guys will want to wear something a little longer.
If you’re trying to figure out what to buy for the summer, or recently hit the beach and found out your current swimwear is out of date, you’re in luck. No matter what your budget is, we have several recommendations that will update your look and have you looking your best. Take a look, and see which ones you like best!
Old Navy Men’s Poplin Swim Trunks
Old Navy is one of the best places for men on a budget to buy their clothes, and swimsuits are no different. This particular example hits the current style on the head. It’s simple, short, solid-colored, and best of all, inexpensive. If you like your first pair, you can always buy the two other colors and still have spent less than $50.
Columbia Sportswear Men’s Backcast Model III
Designed more for outdoor water activities than for lounging by the ocean or swimming in the pool, Columbia’s water shorts still make great swimwear. They’re light, comfortable, dry quickly, and hold up well against wear and tear. In fact, I like them so much, I bought several of them myself.

Nautica Men’s Solid Swim Trunk
While shorter swimwear is back in style, taller guys and those not entirely comfortable showing a little thigh will appreciate the extra length here. Natuica’s trunks are a good, basic swimsuit that will easily get the job done. Plus, if you get it in Cobalt, it will stand out just enough without drawing as much attention as a wild pattern might.
Kanu Surf Men’s St. Moritz
For the man who wants something a little more bold than your typical solid-colored swimsuit, this Kanu Surf Men’s St. Moritz plaid suit would be perfect. Even better, since it’s less than $20, you don’t have to break the bank to get a contemporary, stylish look this summer. Once you get out of the water, they’ll dry quickly, too.
Banana Republic Drawstring Swim Short
Moving up in price, you get nicer fabrics and suits from more prestigious brands. Banana Republic offers a great suit that’s not far above the $50 price floor in this category, but it looks more premium than you would expect. You get a classic look and a classic fit that will last you for years to come.
Polo Ralph Lauren Solid Hawaiian Swim Trunk
Polo has been the brand of choice for the stylish-but-conservative man for years, and this pair of swim trunks is exactly that. Shorter guys or guys who have been doing their squats will appreciate the five inch inseam. Available in a variety of colors, this classic suit has pretty much everything a guy could want.
Polo Ralph Lauren Polka Dot Swim Shorts
Polka dots aren’t just for the ladies. Men can get in on the trend too. This pair from Polo still includes the brand’s famous logo, so people will still know they aren’t just any swim trunks. The polka dot pattern makes a great alternative if solid-colored shorts are too boring for you but plaid is too common.
Mr. Porter sells the polka dot shorts here.
Solid & Striped The Kennedy
Vertical stripes may be slimming, but horizontal stripes are fashionable. When you hit the water this summer, stand out with this pair of navy-striped white trunks. Made from microfiber, they’ll dry quickly and be incredibly comfortable. Plus, they’re named after President Kennedy himself, one of the classiest dressers of all time.

Orlebar Brown “Bulldog”
Just because you want designer swimwear doesn’t mean you need to wear something outlandish. If that’s the case for you, take a look at this pair from Orlebar Brown. From a distance, they look a lot like any other pair of red modern swim trunks, but up close you’ll see they’re much nicer than that. The waist, for example adjusts with slider tabs, not elastic. Even better, the high quality microfiber fabric will be about as comfortable as it gets.
Thom Browne Floral & Dolphin Print Swim Trunks
Summer is a great time to let loose a little, but figuring out just how much to let loose can be difficult. If you’re looking to get some attention from your designer swimsuit, go ahead and give Thom Browne’s patterned pair a look. You’ll certainly get attention in it, but it does a great job of walking the line between wild and gaudy.
